He led eleven men into the North Tower that morning. Lieutenant Kevin Dowdell. Michael Carroll. Gerard Dewan. Jeffrey Giordano. Joseph Ogren. Timothy O'Neill. Jose Guadalupe Perez. John Vigiano II. Eric Weindl.
Brown had already survived the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He knew the building. He climbed anyway.
Ladder 3's rig carried a tiller — a rear-steered ladder truck, longer and harder to maneuver than a standard company's apparatus. It required two drivers working in coordination, one in front, one at the rear axle.
None of the eleven men who entered the North Tower with Brown came back out.
John Vigiano II's father, a retired FDNY captain, lost two sons that day — John to Ladder 3, and Sal to Rescue 5. Their names sit a few blocks apart on the National September 11 Memorial.
The firehouse on East Third Street still runs Ladder 3 today. New members. Same company number. Same call to respond when the alarm sounds.
11 men. One company. One morning that took nearly the entire on-duty crew.
