🎨📚The Center for Book Arts is hosting their annual benefit tonight, where they will honor Marcia Reed! 🎨📚

For nearly forty years, Marcia served as Associate Director for Special Collections and Exhibitions and Chief Curator at the Getty Research Institute. During her time at Getty, she cultivated one of the world's most impressive collections of rare books, prints, and archives, centered around the artists' book. Reed is the author of the award-winning exhibition catalogue "Artists and Their Books / Books and Their Artists" (2018) and "Fluxus Means Change: Jean Brown's Avant Garde Archive" (2021), which documents a foundational collection of more than four thousand artists' books drawn from the Dada, Surrealist, and Fluxus traditions.

Join us this evening at the Getty at 7pm for a discussion of "Marching West: The Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement in Photographs"!

A discussion with authors Karin L. Stanford and Mark Speltz will be moderated by NPR correspondent Karen Grigsby Bates, followed by a book signing.

"Marching West" illuminates the dynamic history of civil rights activism in Los Angeles and explores how the medium of photography both witnessed and advanced the fight for Black equality.

🎷📸 Happy International Jazz Day! 🎶

Today we celebrate jazz—its improvisation, its innovation, its power to tell stories—through the lens of Anthony Barboza. In the book "Eye Dreaming", Barboza’s photographs capture the spirit of jazz and the brilliance of icons like Miles Davis, whose cool, intensity, and creativity resonate through Barboza’s deeply intuitive images.

A member of New York’s legendary Kamoinge collective, Barboza has been making photographs since 1963, guided by what he calls “eye dreaming”—a meditative way of seeing that transforms music, culture, and community into visual poetry. From album covers and iconic portraits to intimate personal projects, his work reflects a profound commitment to Black art and culture in the U.S. and around the world.

"Eye Dreaming", the first monograph on Barboza’s career, traces his journey from New Bedford to New York and beyond, pairing hundreds of striking images with essays and interviews that illuminate his influence, legacy, and deep connection to moments like jazz—where vision, rhythm, and soul meet.

Here’s to jazz, and to the artists who help us see its sound. 🎺✨

💃📸 Happy International Dance Day! 🎉

Today we celebrate movement, rhythm, and the joy of dance, beautifully captured through the lens of Imogen Cunningham, one of America’s most visionary photographers.

Featured in "Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective", Cunningham’s photographs of dancers reflect her deep engagement with the expressive power of the human body in motion. An early feminist and tireless innovator, she worked across Pictorialism and Modernism, turning her camera toward themes of dance, music, the n**e, nature, and everyday life with remarkable sensitivity and originality.

This sweeping retrospective traces Cunningham’s long and influential career through nearly 200 photographs—renowned and rarely seen alike—revealing an artist whose work is as elegant and dynamic as dance itself.

Here’s to art that moves us, today and always. 💫

📘 New Release from Getty Publications

We’re pleased to announce "Anne Vallayer-Coster", a new book in the Illuminating Women Artists series from Getty Publications—offering a fresh feminist perspective on one of eighteenth‑century France’s most celebrated painters.

Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744–1818) was a renowned still‑life painter whose extraordinary talent earned her the patronage of Queen Marie Antoinette. One of only four women admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in the late eighteenth century, she went on to achieve critical acclaim at the Paris Salon. Her sophisticated still lifes—featuring everything from food and flowers to shells, guns, and game—captivated audiences and secured her royal commissions and a private studio at the Louvre.

This volume is the first English-language monograph on Vallayer-Coster in over twenty years. Author Kelsey Brosnan offers a close, insightful reading of the artist’s still-life paintings, presenting a renewed feminist reevaluation and situating Vallayer-Coster alongside contemporaries such as Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, and Jean-Siméon Chardin. Accessible and richly argued, this book provides a new framework for experiencing the visceral power and technical brilliance of Vallayer-Coster’s work.

Discover an artist whose achievements continue to reshape our understanding of art in eighteenth‑century France. 🎨✨

📘 New Release from Getty Publications

We’re excited to announce "Michaelina Wautier", a new volume in the Illuminating Women Artists series from Getty Publications—shining a long‑overdue light on one of the most remarkable painters of the Flemish Baroque.

Born in Mons in the early seventeenth century, Michaelina Wautier (1604–1689) produced an extraordinarily diverse and ambitious body of work. After relocating to Brussels in the 1640s with her brother Charles, she developed a career that encompassed portraits, flower garlands, genre scenes, and large‑scale history paintings—an achievement rare for women artists of her time. Her talent was widely recognized during her lifetime, with works collected by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.

In this richly researched volume, art historian Katlijne Van der Stighelen situates Wautier within the artistic cultures of Brussels and Antwerp, revealing the technical brilliance and intellectual audacity behind paintings such as The Triumph of Bacchus. "Michaelina Wautier" offers a compelling portrait of an artist whose work is only now beginning to receive the recognition it deserves.

Discover the life, context, and legacy of a painter rewriting the history of Baroque art. 🎨✨
