We had so much fun presenting to 1st and 2nd graders at Alta Loma Elementary’s Career Day!

The students got a behind-the-scenes look at what really goes into our monthly reading clubs, from preparing books and coordinating volunteers to designing flyers and inviting special guests.

The students also learned about our mission and got to take part in it themselves. They helped us design flyers and sticker hardcover books, which they each got to keep, and they received bundles of books to share with other kids. It was so sweet to see how excited they were to help our team spread the joy of reading!

Thank you to Alta Loma for inviting us and for giving us the chance to talk with such thoughtful, enthusiastic students! 💙📚

Legendary Bingo is almost here!

Join us this Wednesday, May 20th, for charity bingo in support of Reading to Kids. Bring your friends, your coworkers, your family, or your favorite bingo buddy, and help us raise funds for our reading clubs while enjoying a fun night out in West Hollywood!

Join us this Wednesday, May 20th, for a night of bingo, drag queen fun, and support for Reading to Kids! 🤩🥳

We’ll be at Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood for Legendary Bingo, LA’s longest-running weekly celebrity/drag queen charity event.

The suggested donation is $20 at the door and includes 9 regular bingo games plus 1 grand prize bingo game. A full menu and bar will be available, so come hungry and ready to play!!!

Thank you to everyone who made our May reading clubs so magical! Our lovely volunteers inspired 337 kids this month through stories and craft activities. Some kids even got to meet a real life fairy! 🧚‍♀️🤩

Our May read-aloud books aren’t your typical fairy tales!

Instead of perfect heroes or predictable endings, these books give kids characters who think differently and question the usual fairy tale rules. You’ll see that in “Ra Pu Zel and the Stinky Tofu” by Ying Chang Compestine, a feminist Rapunzel retelling set in China, and in “The Fairy Tale Fixers” by Deborah Underwood, where the prince is far from charming and Cinderella’s dreams are bigger than getting married.

Older grades will hear exciting fantasy stories, including Geronimo Stilton’s “The Kingdom of Fantasy” and “Nic Blake and the Remarkables” by Angie Thomas, which brings African American folklore into a modern magical world.

We’re really excited to share these stories with the kids on Saturday! To feel more prepared, take a few minutes to look over your read-aloud book and craft ideas ahead of time: readingtokids.org/Books/BooksMonth.php
