We’ve had some BIG volunteer milestones lately! 🥳🥳🥳

If you didn’t know, Reading to Kids volunteers receive a milestone certificate for every 10 reading clubs they attend. As you can see, some of our volunteers have racked up quite a few…!! To add some perspective, reaching 100 reading clubs means showing up consistently for more than 8 YEARS!!! 🤯

We’re so grateful for every volunteer who keeps coming back month after month. Whether you’re celebrating 10 clubs or 100+, thank you for being such an important part of the Reading to Kids community! 💙

We were all thinking it, and we’re here to tell you it’s true!!!

Researchers at The New School found that reading fiction improves a person’s capacity to understand what others are thinking and feeling, in other words, their emotional intelligence. And emotional intelligence is the first step towards developing empathy! Reading also teaches values and experiences other than our own, which helps people better put themselves in someone else’s shoes 🌎💕👡

A 2014 study backs this up: 2nd graders either drew pictures about the story, or talked about the characters’ emotion. The students who discussed the characters’ emotions showed real gains in understanding others, in theory of mind, and in empathy. And those gains were still there six months later!

This is a big part of why our volunteers matter so much. Every time they sit down with a kid and talk through a story together, they’re helping them build emotional intelligence and empathy, skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives!

We loved welcoming the kiddos back to school at our August reading clubs on Saturday! Each child left with a blue bag full of brand-new school supplies to help them start the year off strong 🫶🎉

As always, we’re so grateful for everyone who worked together to make these reading clubs a success! Thank you to our volunteers and partner schools for your support, and thank you to everyone who donated to our school supply giveaway!! We can’t wait to give out more bags next month at our “Arts & Imagination” reading clubs on September 12th 📚🎨✏️💕

Our August reading club theme is "Back to School Fun," featuring six wonderful books selected by the teachers at MacArthur Park Elementary 💙📚

The stories for our younger grades touch on all the emotions that come with starting a new school year. Kindergarteners will see how one small act of kindness can help a quiet classmate feel visible and included, 1st graders will hear a reassuring story about starting a new grade, while 2nd graders will enjoy a funny first-day story with a clever surprise 🧑‍🏫🏫

Older students will explore belonging, friendship, and disability through three very different adventures. 3rd graders will meet a mysterious boy who crashes to Earth and learns to navigate an unfamiliar world, 4th graders will hear Cece Bell’s funny and honest story of growing up deaf, and 5th graders will join a confident Aven Green as she adjusts to a new school and investigates a mystery at a rundown theme park 🚀🦸🌵

During their well-earned summer vacation, 76 kiddos chose to come to school for our July reading clubs. We couldn’t feel more honored!

To us, that’s proof that we’ve made reading a fun, social experience that children genuinely look forward to. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for creating such a fun morning for the kids, and to our partner schools for making our reading clubs possible each month! 💙📚

Our July reading club theme is “Amazing Animals,” and our read-aloud books are full of them! 🐻🐧🐶

Kindergarteners will shake, tilt, and turn the pages to rescue a dog that gets eaten by a book, 1st graders will discover the true story behind Winnie-the-Pooh, and 2nd graders will dive into the fascinating world of penguins! These books give our younger grades lots of fun ways to participate and learn something new 📖

In "Dogtown," 3rd graders will meet a three-legged shelter dog and her robot dog companion in a story that explores belonging and found family. Meanwhile, our 4th graders will hear a page-turning mystery in "Belly Up" about the suspicious death of a famous zoo hippo, and 5th graders will meet a dog responsible for keeping watch over the park he calls home 🔎🐾
