May is Mental Health Awareness month! In recognition, we are sharing out Head & HeART, a wellbeing and creativity resource from P.S. ARTS that includes creative activities that support mental health awareness for kids. Mental health is the foundation for wellbeing, and taking care of our minds helps us thrive. Creating art and being creative can help express thoughts and feelings in ways that connect us with others through our heads and hearts.

This week, in recognition of AAPI month, we’re spotlighting contemporary artist Elyse Pignolet! Pignolet lives and works in Long Beach, with a studio at Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro. Of Filipino heritage, she grew up in Oakland, CA, and studied Fine Arts at San Francisco State University before completing her BFA in ceramics at Cal State Long Beach in 2007. Pignolet’s ceramic work often addresses political and social issues, particularly the tension between feminism and misogyny, and challenges cultural stereotypes.

Pignolet's work is currently on exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art. In “Holding Time: The Works of Elyse Pignolet and MyungJin Kim,” the exhibition showcases two contemporary Southern California women artists who use ceramics—particularly vessels—as a medium for storytelling. While their visual styles and narratives differ greatly, this exhibition brings their work together to explore how both artists have broken from the conceptual traditions of ceramics introduced by southern California ceramicists of the early 1960’s.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! In celebration, P.S. ARTS will be highlighting AAPI artists all month long. This week, we're proud to spotlight local music group, The Linda Lindas! The Linda Lindas—Mila, Eloise, Lucia, and Bela—are a half-Asian, half-Latinx punk rock band from Los Angeles. They began playing their instruments with little musical experience in January of 2018, and by that summer they were an official garage punk band writing and performing original songs. A performance of their song, “Racist Sexist Boy” at the empty L.A. Public Library went viral on social media in the spring of 2021. Veteran musicians credit their popularity to their honest lyrics, raw emotion, and passionate performances that represent the voices of young people living through a global pandemic and social upheaval.

The Linda Lindas were one of P.S. ARTS’ featured artists in our 2021–2022 Theme & Anchorworks guide! To learn more about their music and ways to incorporate their work into the classroom, visit the link below.
