Alliance for People of Color

Alliance for People of Color We are a program within Postpartum Support International bridging the gap in perinatal support services for families and providers of color.

The Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color was created in February 2017 by Divya B. Kumar, LCSW, ScM, CLC, Jabina Coleman, LSW, IBCLC, and Desirรฉe Israel, LCSW-C to fill the gap in support services for professionals and communities of color around perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. In 2022 the PMHA-POC became a program within PSI, and in the same year Andrea Clark Horton became th

e Director. Under her guidance the PMHA-POC will continue to fulfill the organizationโ€™s mission and vision by building on the foundation of educating, supporting, advocating, and being a resource for providers and communities of color.

๐ŸŒˆ A rainbow baby is a symbol of hope after loss, not a replacement for the baby who came before.
Pregnancy and the postpartum period after a loss can be filled with hopeโ€”but also with fear, anxiety, guilt, and hypervigilance.

As healthcare providers, we can make a difference by asking about previous losses, validating families' emotions, and providing trauma-informed care that honors each family's unique story.

๐Ÿ’› Supporting families also means recognizing that grief and love can coexist.

What does it look like when Black families are surrounded by the support they need to breastfeed and feed their babies on their own terms? ๐Ÿ’› In honor of Black Breastfeeding Week, this monthโ€™s Coloring the Conversation centers the people doing this work in community.

Join us for a conversation about supporting Black breastfeeding in the community and the role that doulas, lactation professionals, midwives, peer supporters, and other community-based providers can play in creating more accessible, culturally responsive care.

Our guests include:
โœจ Jodie Sessoms, CD, CLC โ€” TruDoulas of New Jersey

Together, weโ€™ll explore the barriers Black families continue to navigate, the power of culturally congruent care, and what becomes possible when breastfeeding support is rooted in trust, dignity, and community.

The questions we choose to study shape the care families receive tomorrow.
When research includes more voices, lived experiences, and perspectives, it leads to more informed decisions, stronger policies, and care that better reflects the realities of the communities we serve.
If there's a question you've always wished someone would explore, maybe it's time to ask it yourself.

๐Ÿ“… Applications are open through August 31.

Together, we can help build the evidence our communities deserve.

What if one idea became a research project?
What if that project helped improve care for families in your community?
What if you found mentors who believed in your work, peers who challenged your thinking, and a platform to share your voice?

The Alliance Fellowship is more than a research experienceโ€”it's an opportunity to grow as a leader, contribute to meaningful change, and help shape a more equitable future in perinatal mental health.

Maybe your journey begins with one application.

In this first edition of Roots of Care, we explore how the Nasa Indigenous People of Colombia understand breastfeeding as a practice deeply connected to culture, community, and collective well-being.

As healthcare providers, we have the opportunity to learn from this ancestral knowledge and provide culturally responsive care that listens, respects, and integrates each family's experiences, values, and beliefs.

Every family is the expert in their own story.
As providers, we don't need to know everything about every culture to provide culturally responsive care. What we can do is approach each family with curiosity, humility, and a willingness to learn from the people we serve.
Join Amaris Gibson as we explore how these principles can strengthen perinatal care and support infant mental health in our upcoming webinar.
