One year after ICE raids, community groups say these needs remain urgent

Boyle Heights Beat asked local advocacy and community groups what needs remain most urgent today and how people can help in those efforts.

It’s been one year since ICE raids intensified across Los Angeles.

For many on the Eastside, these moments were marked by fear, uncertainty and disruption, but they also revealed something stronger: community and resistance.

Neighbors organized rapid response networks. Families showed up for one another on the streets, at schools and in living rooms. Community organizations were on the ground offering support. After care became a lifeline.

This video poem, with words by Xavi Moreno and animated illustrations by Pepe Te Adoro, reflects on that year and the ways communities chose to care for each other.

Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo.

State Sen. María Elena Durazo declared victory late Tuesday in the race to represent nearly 2 million residents across Los Angeles County in areas including unincorporated East LA and the San Gabriel Valley.

The state senator avoided a November runoff by winning more than 50% of the vote to represent District 1, including unincorporated East Los Angeles.

Street vendors gathered outside the vote center at the Boyle Heights City Hall on Election Day, giving away free tamales, aguas frescas, bolis, tacos and more to voters and neighbors.

The event was organized by Community Power Collective to encourage residents to hit the polls and celebrate community participation while uplifting street vendors across the city.

Haven’t voted yet? Street vendors and Community Power Collective will be at the Boyle Heights City Hall until 8 p.m.! 🗳️
