Ballots drop NOW, so it’s time to lock in on this one.

Where do the City Attorney candidates stand on the issues that matter for Downtown residents? What do they actually have the power to do to help our neighborhood?

Here’s your chance to find out.

We’re super grateful that candidates Marissa Roy and John McKinney will join us for a Downtown-focused forum to help you better understand what they can do if elected and where they stand.

We’re asking the questions residents submitted on topics like:

- Nuisance properties, building fires, and blight
- Tennant and consumer protections
- Open-air drug markets and drug diversion programs
- LA City liability payouts
- Copper wire theft and illegal dumping
- 41.18 enforcement and coordination
- Impact litigation

The place to be next Tuesday if you care about DTLA.

Downtown gets our very own conversation with the candidates for Los Angeles City Attorney on Tuesday, October 6 at noon, on Zoom.

The City Attorney’s office touches nearly every issue we organize around, from housing laws, nuisance properties, and vacant storefronts to neighborhood prosecution and code enforcement for misdemeanors like drug use and retail theft. This is a lunch hour worth clearing. This will also be your chance to learn more about what the office does, and how it can help Downtown thrive, and whose vision for DTLA most aligns with your own. We’ll be asking questions sourced straight from residents about our community.

We’ve confirmed both candidates on your ballot, John McKinney and Marissa Roy, and we’re excited to hear from them both on Downtown issues. We’re sourcing resident questions to drive the conversation. Join us for a special Third Thursday, a DTLA-focused Mayoral Candidate Conversation at Clifton’s in the Historic Core.

The night is hosted in collaboration with community partners the South Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA) South Park Neighborhood Association, the LA River Artists and Business Association (LARABA) LARABA, and DTLA Proud DTLA PROUD

This is where Downtown gets to hear directly from the candidates for Mayor of Los Angeles about the issues that matter most to us every day.

Both candidates Karen Bass and Nithya Raman are confirmed as of 9/29.

Each candidate will take the stage on their own, back to back, for 40 minutes to answer the same questions sourced directly from you, Downtown residents, about the future of our neighborhood.

This is a nonpartisan community civic engagement event: our goal as community groups is to help Downtown voters make informed decisions at the polls, and to ensure the Mayor of LA is developing and executing a resident-centered vision for a vibrant, thriving DTLA.

THIRD THURSDAYS is back this week! 🍻 This month we’re headed to SKYDUSTER — a brand new brewery and sports bar in the Fashion District, and we could not be more excited to welcome them to the neighborhood. They have great b**r, bites, and a fun indoor/outdoor atmosphere for sports games and casual neighborhood hang-outs.

We are co-hosting with long-time community favorite, Michelin-recognized Italian restaurant Rossoblu , which will serve its last dinner on November 1 after a decade in the Fashion District. Rossoblu has been more than a great place to eat. Its owners, Dina and Steve Samson, are past Downtown residents and have been tireless advocates for this community, organizing local businesses to champion a more vibrant, safer DTLA.

We wanted our last gathering with them to be a celebration rather than a goodbye. Please come raise a glass, say thank you, and tell them what their table has meant to you, or try Rossoblu for the last time before they wind down operations.

THE CANDIDATES 🗳️ For September, we’re hosting a casual meet and greet, not a forum. No stage, no timers, no opening statements. Just a chance to talk with the people on your ballot. We have invited candidates from:

• City Council District 9
• Los Angeles County Sheriff
• State Senate District 26

As always, every qualified candidate in these races receives the same invitation, the same information, and the same access to our neighbors. ‼️ DTLA RA does not endorse candidates in any race.

ADVOCACY UPDATES 🗣️ We will also share where things stand on our active priorities and the concrete ways you can get involved between now and November 3, including critical park-related advocacy, our efforts related to public safety, open air drug use and sales, and economic recovery.

Bring a neighbor or friend. Bring your questions. Bring the thing you have been meaning to tell a candidate in person.

Downtown organized. The City is listening. Now we need your voice again.

Open-air drug use and sales are one of the top concerns that Mayor Bass’s office has heard from Downtown residents and stakeholders this year. Her team just launched a new DTLA public safety working group, and they’re asking residents directly: which interventions do you actually support or oppose?

We put together a short survey (3 to 4 minutes) covering everything from foot patrols to treatment to housing to cleanup, so your answer informs our answer to City Hall. You can stay anonymous or give direct input via the survey.

Join us for Third Thursday on the rooftop at
Broadway’s The Hoxton

Enjoy the long days, great weather, and spectacular Downtown views with neighbors at Hoxton Hotel on Broadway. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

This 1922 Beaux Arts building, formerly the Los Angeles Railway Building, was built in 1922 and originally designed as the headquarters for the old L.A. Railway streetcar company. The structure later saw use as a garment manufacturer, a candy shop, and a grocery store. It opened as the Hoxton Hotel in 2019 after two years of careful restoration and updates.

We’ll share updates on upcoming Downtown events, plans for the fall election run-offs, and how to apply for Resident Association committee opportunities this summer.

It’s been a wild few weeks leading up to Election Day and DTLA RA has been busy making sure Downtowners got in front of candidates and more importantly, voted! 🗳️ We will be sharing some insights about the election results, Downtown voter turnout stats (way higher than previous elections 👏🏾 ) and next steps as we head into runoffs.

LA is feeling electric today as we get ready to host our first World Cup game… Go 🇺🇸!! There’s soooo much going on this weekend but before you get fully immersed in the games, we’d like to catch your attention to share how excited we are about our next Third Thursdays mixer!

Join us next Thursday 6/18 to celebrate Juneteenth at one of DTLA’s newest cocktail bars, Sincerely Yours — a Black-owned business curated and owned by favorite long-time DTLA DJ and hospitality leader Earry Hall.
