On Saturday, October 10th, California Wing had the privilege of presenting Ms. Elaine Lynn with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Awarded to all WWII Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members by President Obama in 2014, the Congressional Gold Medal expresses the highest National recognition for outstanding achievements by individuals or institutions.

Elaine became a pilot at the age of 14, challenging societal norms of the 1940’s. She and thousands of CAP members patrolled the homeland, transported goods, reported German U-Boats, and trained Air Corps pilots for combat.

After a morning ceremony at the Castle Air Museum, members were invited to attend the Fresno State Football game for a second ceremony where Elaine’s Alma Mater honored her service.

Ready to level up your leadership skills?

The Cadet Officer Basic Course (COBC) is part of the California Wing Integrated Leadership Program and teaches cadet officers to inspire a unit, speak with confidence, and apply leadership in real-world situations.

It’s challenging, incredibly rewarding, and provides Cadet Leadership School credit toward your Eaker Award.

Registration closes November 1, 2026, and signing up doesn’t guarantee a spot.

On September 27, Vandenberg Composite Squadron 101 hosted a community open house at the Santa Maria Airport. The event provided an opportunity for the public to learn more about Civil Air Patrol (CAP), explore squadron 101’s capabilities, meet our members, and discover how both youth and adults can get involved in CAP.

Visitors had the opportunity to get an up-close look at one of our Cessna 182 aircraft, explore the cockpit and interior, and learn about the specialized equipment used in missions.

Attendees also explored squadron 101’s Redbird flight simulator and participated in hands-on activities featuring Aerospace Education STEM kits and Rocketry curriculum.
