A look back at the Nikkei Community Internship Mid-Program Retreat in LA! ☀️

Though their trip was brief, the San Jose and San Francisco cohorts had the chance to explore historic Little Tokyo with tours led by the LA interns. Together, they stayed at the Miyako Hotel, visited the Go For Broke National Education Center, and enjoyed some of Little Tokyo’s favorite local eats (and lots of matcha). 😊

To wrap up the trip, everyone cooled off from the summer heat at Higashi Honganji’s Obon Festival with refreshing shave ice while enjoying the festivities. 🍧✈️

LAST DAY OF 2026 KIZUNA SUMMER CAMPS!🥹👏🩷

We’re so so thankful to our wonderful counselors and campers and community at WLA, who truly ended our summer season with a bang💥💪 Special occasions all around with Pie-the-Counselor, Nicknaming Ceremony, and an Open House full of 8th grade speeches, a nisei week grand parade, and a taiko performance!🥁❣️

It went by so fast and we have so much content to remember this year by, so stay tuned!!🩷 And we hope to see you all next summer👋☀️

Little Tokyo Field Trip was like a dream~✨

What a fun, smooth day in our beloved Japantown with our WLA summer campers!!🥹🩷 They truly took in all of the sights and shops and legacy that Little Tokyo had to offer👏 Special thanks to WWII Camp Wall Monument for preparing our campers for the day with an important JA history lesson!

Even after the long day, our counselors put on an exciting Talent Show as a gift to their campers for being so good today! It was an array of different acts, like dance battles, mind reading, and push up contests???🤯💃🕺👯‍♂️🔮💪

WLA SUMMER CAMP DAY 3🩷👏

Our last day of workshops was today and it was very productive session of Nisei Week floats for a grand parade, Japanese Wind Chimes, and Taiko!!! 🚗🎐🥁

DAY 2 AT WLA SUMMER CAMP 🌱🌱🌱

Exclusively at WLA, we have a wonderful guest, Scott or Uni, who taught our campers the tranquil art form of KOKEDAMA (meaning moss ball) ! 🧶🌳🪴 Thank you so much Little Tokyo Florist for the lovely moss!

We returned to our standard Tuesday schedule with creative and fun Kokeshi dolls, Hashi Oki Part 2, BINGO, and our last Changing Tides workshop (human knot & drawing telephone)🥹🥹🥹 Bittersweet to be doing these activities for the last time this summer☀️❤️‍🩹

WEST LA SUMMER CAMP DAY 1✨🌠🌌

Can’t believe it’s our FINAL week of summer camp already🥹 Our final Monday full of Day 1 crafts like Woodblock Printing, Kintsugi, and Hashi Oki🩵 Our WLA campers are super creative and artistic, so it’s very exciting to see! And our counselors ran a fun Water Play at the end of the day to cool us all off.🤣💦

GARDENA SUMMER CAMP WEEK 2: FINISH✅🏁

🥹 It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to our campers, counselors, and Gardena Buddhist Church ! 🩷😭 We had two wonderful weeks here, so definitely counting down the days we return~ This Friday was filled with laughter, a Nisei Week Grand Parade, Taiko Performance, Open House/Art Gallery, 8th Grade Speeches, and, of course, Nickname Ceremony👑🩵

Another hot day in Little Tokyo, but infinite opportunities for fun in the sun !! ☀️👋

Our Gardena Week 2 Summer Campers were able to make the most out of their field trip day with delicious lunch from a Japanese market, shopping galore, yummy desserts to cool them down🍙🛒🛍️🍦🍨🧋🍡

As for the educational aspect of today, huge thank you to WWII Camp Wall Monument for presenting your mission and touching on the importance of remembering Japanese American history, especially before we explored our beloved Japantown. Our campers filled out a Little Tokyo Bingo card as well that had them looking for trivia answers and taking photos with historic spots! 🩵📸

Even after the hot & long day, our hardworking Counselors put on a Talent Show to entertain their tired campers !! 🩷🥹

GARDENA WEEK 2 SUMMER CAMP !! 🩷👑🩵

We started off the day with our Nisei Week Foundation workshop, where our campers make floats (with important themes of Japanese cultural values) for our very own Grand Parade. AND we had the privilege of having 2025 Nisei Week Princess Casey visit us today to tell us more about this historic Japanese festival (and Queen and Court Program)!! 🥹 Our campers asked so many wonderful questions and we were so happy they could meet the person who helped create the workshop.

The summer fun continued as we also made beautiful Japanese wind chimes today! 🎐🎐🎐 Taiko drums also get us in a festive mood and thankful for our counselors (Hot Dog and Dew) who performed👏👏 Lastly, our campers got to pie their favorite counselors (earlier than other summer camp weeks!)
