Hello Folks,

It was a pleasure to see so many of your smiling (and sunburning) faces at EAF yesterday! This evening, from 5 - 6 PM in the Student Activities Center (SAC) Conference Room 1-3, we will be giving an introductory talk to kick off the fall quarter. During the talk we’ll discuss some some core EA concepts and puzzles - as well as how to best navigate our club and get the most of our resources. And as if that wasn’t enough of a sell - we also plan to have boba available for those who wish to partake. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. We look forward to seeing you there!

Warmly,
Joshua Doland and Brandon Ward

Hello everyone! We’re continuing to host our EA club dinners this quarter, but on a fortnightly basis. Be sure to save this post so you’ll know when we’re meeting, and equally importantly, when we’re not meeting.

It’s free food, thoughtful conversations, and a lovely community. We can all agree the expected value here is very attractive. Join us, and bring friends!

The Advanced Fellowship will introduce fellows to longtermism, the view that positively influencing the long-term future is a key moral priority for our time. Longtermism is a lively topic within the greater EA movement; in learning to engage with longtermism on a non-superficial level, you will be able to meaningfully participate in global conferences and discussions within the EA community.

This fellowship will span week 1 - 8 of the Winter Quarter. For the first 7 weeks, we will hold hour long group discussions on various topics pertaining to longtermism. The final week, Week 8, will be dedicated to individual presentations which we will discuss further in Week 1 of the fellowship.

The selected readings from week 1 - 5 are intended to prepare you to read The Case for Strong Longtermism by Hilary Greaves and William MacAskill. This piece which is unsurprisingly a defense of longtermism presupposes at least some familiarity with everything we cover before.

Some efforts to improve the world can be much more impactful than others. Smallpox eradication, the abolitionist movement, germ theory, and the Green Revolution demonstrate what's possible when people come together to solve pressing problems. But these opportunities are few and far between. At the other end of the spectrum, well-intended initiatives have been ineffective or even counterproductive.

Doing good better is one of the defining challenges of our time. Recognizing this need, Effective Altruism at UCLA facilitates the Intro Fellowship to equip UCLA students with the knowledge to do good in the world more effectively and the tools to think critically about their career ambitions. By the end of the quarter, fellows have access to in-depth coaching, career connections, and unique opportunities to help others as part of a happy and meaningful life.
