Gloria Roque's story starts years before she walked into our NEW Women's Business Center, but it's here at NEW that her next chapter took shape.

In 2019, Gloria and her daughter Jennifer opened their first store, Three Minute Suits, in South Gate, built on Jennifer's 16 years in the business and Gloria's savings. The pandemic closed their mall location in 2020, but loyal customers carried them to a new home in Montebello by 2022.

Now, in 2026, Gloria is opening a second store, with a vision for three: one for each of her children. To get there, she turned to NEW's Women's Business Center for help with permits, licenses, and business registration, support that carried her new store, Last Minute Suits, to its official registration on May 5th and its grand opening on July 31st, alongside California State Senate and Assembly representatives.

From one store to a family legacy: this is what NEW is here for.

🎒✨ Back to School 2026

114 families. 550 backpacks. Three events across the Valley. Here's how it went. 💛

This month, NEW hosted Back to School events at our Canoga Park and Van Nuys centers and joined the Back to School Orientation at Magnolia Science Academy. We welcomed more than 114 families and distributed over 550 backpacks filled with notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, and more — plus free school uniform resources for families who needed them.

School supplies are one of the biggest out-of-pocket costs families face all year. For many of the families we serve, that's a significant expense to absorb all at once. Every backpack we hand out is money that stays in a family's budget.

Families came for backpacks, but walked away with much more! Connections with BMO Bank, Zocalo Health, Mission City Community Network, and the LA County Dept. of Mental Health on site. And kids decorated their own backpacks with charms and patches. 🎨

Senator Caroline Menjivar joined us to address the community and hand out backpacks — giving families a chance to be seen and heard by someone who represents them. Thank you, Senator. 🙌

🔢 By the numbers:
✅ 114+ families served
✅ 550+ backpacks distributed
✅ 800+ community members reached
✅ 3 community events

Thank you to our partners, volunteers, and every family who joined us. Here's to a great school year ahead! 🍎
