Happy 88th Birthday, Los Angeles Chinatown!
On June 25, 1938, Los Angeles celebrated the grand opening of "New Chinatown" (centered at Central Plaza, address: 943 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012) after the original community was demolished to make way for Union Station. California Governor Frank F. Merriam officially dedicated and participated in the grand opening. Other dignitaries present were Los Angeles Mayor Frank Shaw and actress Anna May Wong. More than 30,000 attendees gathered for the festivities which featured parades, and firework displays, marking it as the first Chinese district in the U.S. conceived, planned, and owned by Chinese Americans.

Join NCAPA and the Asian American Disinformation Table to learn about the impact of AI on racialized disinformation. Speakers will share about the impact of generative AI on AAPI communities, media literacy education, and implications on platform and federal policies. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of AI on disinformation, including election-related narratives, and learn how to protect themselves and their communities from AI disinformation.

Mahjong with LAist

Tuesday, June 23, 6:00-8:00pm (PT), at Blossom Market Hall (264 So. Mission Dr., San Gabriel, CA 91776), LAist will be working with community to host a mahjong event for beginners and mahjong fanatics alike. The first hour will be dedicated to teaching mahjong for beginners along with open play. All in all, it's just a nice, free community event which comes at perfect timing with the surge of interest in mahjong expressed by events at the Langley Senior Center in Monterey Park and at General Lee's in Chinatown, for instance.

Commemorating Vincent Chin

The fatal, racially-motivated attack and murder of Vincent Chin took place in Detroitvand became a landmark case that catalyzed the Asian American civil rights movement. Chin was beaten into a coma on June 19, 1982, and passed away four days later on June 23, 1982, after succumbing to his injuries. This commemoration will be the 44th Anniversary of his death.

The event will be held at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center’s outdoor amphitheater located at 9 Truman St. in Irvine. Doors will open at 10:30am, and the event will begin promptly at 11:00am. This event will bring together members of our community to observe AAPI Heritage Month, discuss ways to empower our communities, and hear ideas from the local leaders who work tirelessly to make a difference in Orange County.
