LAEP and KJLH = Maternal Magic!

LAEP had an incredible time serving as speakers at this year’s KJLH Women’s Health Expo!

LAEP’s Danielle Watson, Director, Early Childhood & Family Engagement, and Meyli Martinez, Assistant Director, Early Childhood & Family Engagement, led an engaging conversation, “Moms Matter Too: Why Maternal Well-Being Shapes a Child’s First 1,000 Days.”

Together, they connected with mothers, grandmothers, caregivers, and community members about why supporting mothers is essential to giving children a strong start.

To everyone who showed up, listened, shared, and asked thoughtful questions—thank you. Your engagement helps build greater awareness and stronger, healthier families.

And a special thank you to RadioFree KJLH for creating space for these important conversations and giving LAEP the opportunity to connect directly with community families. We’re grateful for the partnership!

First day of photos for LAEP captured the essence of our kiddos! From books to looks, smiles and chalkboard signs—held by adults who might just be cheesing harder than the kids!

At LAEP, we’re serious about educational equity from diapers to diplomas℠, but when it’s photo day? We’re all just big kids at heart. 💚 💙

We are filled with pride to stand alongside Black Californians United for Early Care and Education (Black Californians United for Early Care and Education) as a sponsor for this year’s summit!

Day 2 is underway, and our CEO, Dr. Dawn A. Kurtz, alongside Director of Ready2Teach Elsa Leal, is on the ground immersed in community, learning, and celebration. So far, the highlights have included powerful conversations with our valued employer partners, connecting with BlackECE Co-Founder Dr. Ashley C. (Dr. Ash) Williams, and feeling the energy of an electric live drumline performance!

This room has been radiating power, wisdom, hard truths, and pure Black joy, from two dynamic “Chop It Up” sessions to a captivating keynote from Michael Harriot that had everyone taking notes.

Here’s to an incredible Day 2 and building the future together!

Congratulations to Chris and Azia!

This week, LAEP’s College & Career team celebrated the completion of the SCALL Law Library Internship in partnership with Southern California Association of Law Libraries, LMU Loyola Law School, and California Court of Appeal Second Appellate District.

After reviewing nearly 20 applications, Chris, a rising senior at High School (Augustus F Hawkins High School), and Azia, a recent Hawkins High School graduate and incoming UCLA freshman, were selected for this incredible summer opportunity.

Through LAEP’s Expose. Inspire. Support. model, they explored careers in the legal field, built relationships with professionals, strengthened their workplace skills, and gained the confidence to pursue their future goals.

A special thank you to our internship partners, Sangeeta Pal, Access Services Librarian at the UCLA Law Library; Diana C. Jaque, Law Librarian III and Adjunct Professor of Law at USC Gould School of Law; and Robert Rosas, Research Analyst at Sidley Austin LLP, mentors like their College & Career Coordinator, Sylvia Leiva, and guest speakers for investing in our students and making this experience so meaningful.

Congratulations, Chris and Azia, we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next!

Back-to-school season is almost here, and there’s no better time to reconnect with the programs and resources available to students and families!

Whether your child attends a school served by LAEP in Los Angeles Unified School District, Pomona Unified School District, or another partner school community, we’re committed to helping students thrive by connecting them with the support they need to succeed.

Our Community Schools program goes beyond the classroom by bringing together educators, families, and community partners to create safe, supportive, and opportunity-filled learning environments.

In this inspiring 2-minute video, you’ll meet Essence, one of our dedicated Community Schools team members, and Jonathan, a student whose story reflects the impact of meaningful relationships, access to resources, and a school community that truly cares.

As the new school year begins, we invite you to learn more about how LAEP is helping students and families build brighter futures—one school, one family, and one community at a time.

🎥 Watch the video and discover what Community Schools are all about.
