In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we are highlighting Black mother artists from our roster and recent projects.
(BMHW), held annually from April 11โ17 and founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), advances care, advocacy, and health equity for Black mothers. It raises awareness about high, preventable maternal mortality rates and centers on reproductive justice, community building, and policy solutions.
Today we highlight Lex Marie (LEX MARIE) and her flag and quilt series featuring hospital receiving blankets. Lex Marie is a multidisciplinary artist and mother who uses portraiture and more recently conceptual and installation art to explore the nuances of motherhood and to document her greatest muse, her son Aiden. Marie's quilted series, utilizes newborn receiving blankets as canvas and collage to symbolize the layered needs for rest and comfort in the postpartum journey. Marie essentially weaves together her own story as a young mother and also asks viewers to examine their own origin story and the memories and materials from their date of birth. Marie also reconstructs the blankets as American flags, calling more attention to the maternal labor, specifically Black maternal labor, which has shaped and raised the country from its origin.
Marie's work recently appeared in two curatorial projects by Dominique Clayton (Dominique Clayton) -- "See Me: Unapologetic Voices in Sisterhood" presented at Weinstein Gallery and "Giving You The Best That I Got" presented at Art + Practice in collaboration with California African American Museum.
