Extraordinary Families is a leading nonprofit foster family, adoption and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the daily lives, and long-term outcomes of children impacted by child welfare, from newborns to young adults. Working with children and families, we combine best practices with proven research and advocacy to create visionary policies, innovative programs and scalable services that produce measurable improvements in the lives of

September is National Kinship Care Month 💜

When children can’t safely remain with their parents, DCFS asks: Who else loves this child?

Often, the answer is a grandparent, aunt or uncle, cousin, older sibling, or family friend who steps up to provide a safe and loving home—sometimes with little notice or preparation.

Kinship caregivers help children stay connected to their family, culture, history, and community during times of uncertainty. Their commitment makes an incredible difference, but they shouldn’t have to navigate it alone.

There are children in our community who need safe, supportive, and loving families to open their homes to them. Becoming a resource parent can make an incredible difference in a child’s life — sometimes at a moment when they need it most.

Our 2026 Summer Picnic was one for the books! We had a wonderful afternoon of connection, laughter, and fun at Kenneth Hahn Park on Saturday! 🌳☀️

Families came together to enjoy crafts, play games, share a meal, and build community in a space filled with joy and connection. We’re so grateful for our incredible resource parents and the children who made the day so special. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we loved spending time together and creating memories that remind us of the strength of our community. 💙

We have the honor of marching at West Hollywood Pride next month so please look out for us there. For Foster Care Month, we asked some of our extraordinary ambassadors to reflect back on their time as resource parents:

"I remember looking forward to our visits with the Extraordinary Families team. We couldn’t wait to share all the new things our kiddo was doing. It felt more like catching up with a friend than a home visit." - Johnny

Johnny and his partner Larry met little Devin in 2022 when he was only 3 weeks old. Two years later, they had the opportunity to become a forever family through adoption.

We are so grateful for supporters like Larry and Johnny who continuously provide support for our prospective parents who are new to foster care. Thank you for all that you do!

May is National Foster Care Month. 💛
Join us in raising awareness for the many children in foster care who are waiting for one caring adult to step forward and provide love and security.

Kira took that leap of faith—and through foster care, she met her amazing daughter, Zoe. In 2021, they became a forever family.

“Foster care means expanding the prosaic meaning of the term ‘family.’ It means opening your heart and home to the expansion of love and the possibility of forever. It brought me the daughter I was waiting to meet since I first conceived of being a mother. It is an adventure into the unknown and into the certitude of love.”
