We will never forget LAPD Policeman Gary McDonald, who was shot and killed by a robbery suspect whom he and his partner cornered in the rear of a market after responding to a silent alarm.

As he was being handcuffed, the suspect gained control of Policeman McDonald's partner's handgun and shot him three times. While he was collapsing, he pulled his pistol and killed the suspect.

Policeman McDonald had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 11 months. He was survived by his expectant wife, who gave birth to their son eight days later.

In 1966, the Los Angeles Police Department awarded Policeman McDonald the Medal of Valor for his bravery on October 6, 1965.

Shut down. Arrested. Impounded.

The crackdown continues. The LASD Street Takeover Task Force took down events in Compton, Carson, and Century City this weekend, ruining some weekends:
- 38 arrests
- 127 citations issued
- 25 vehicles towed
- 2 fi****ms seized

Deputies disrupted multiple events, including a massive takeover in Compton drawing over 200 people.

If your idea of a fun weekend is terrorizing a neighborhood in a street takeover, wise up. Watchers will walk away with expensive citations and drivers, well, it just may be the lock up for you and your ride.

Rampart Narcotics officers arrested two suspected drug dealers during overnight patrols at MacArthur Park. Operating separately in the same area, both suspects were caught with large quantities of prescription meds for sale, including Xanax, Hydrocodone, Clonazepam, and Oxycodone.

Targeted enforcement around MacArthur Park continues as LAPD works to clear dangerous narcotics off our streets.

We will never forget LAPD Police Officer David Kubly, who was shot and killed by a robbery suspect following a short vehicle pursuit.

Officer Kubly had attempted to stop the vehicle after observing it run a red light. The suspect led Officer Kubly on a pursuit, which ended when the vehicle crashed into a business. As the suspect emerged from the wreck, he opened fire on Officer Kubly, striking him once in the chest. Officer Kubly was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

The suspect, 22, was apprehended 9 hours after the shooting. The ensuing investigation revealed that the suspect had stolen a car and had committed several other robberies earlier in the day. On April 2, 1980, he was found guilty of murdering Officer Kubly and sentenced to life with no parole. As of December 1, 2022, he was in Chuckawalla State Prison.

Officer Kubly had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 18 months. He was survived by his wife, parents, and three sisters.

He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

Sixteen LAPD officers will be recognized today during the department’s 2026 Above & Beyond Awards Ceremony for acts of extraordinary courage and sacrifice spanning more than five decades. The honorees include officers who entered burning buildings to rescue children, confronted armed suspects, survived devastating on-duty attacks and placed themselves directly in harm’s way to protect fellow officers and members of the public. Among those being recognized is Sgt. Shiou Lih Deng, who was fatally struck while assisting a stranded motorist on the 405 Freeway in 2025. Chief Jim McDonnell will present the awards honoring officers who “knowingly and courageously placed themselves in grave danger to protect others.”

Nithya Raman’s record on policing is worth a closer look. In 2020, she called to “defund the police” and advocated for transforming LAPD into a “much smaller, specialized armed force.” She later opposed the 2023 LAPPL contract providing officer raises and retention incentives, and in January voted against hiring 170 additional officers. Today, LAPD is down to approximately 8,500 officers, making decisions about recruitment, retention and staffing increasingly consequential for public safety in Los Angeles.

Actions speak much louder than words. Councilmember Nithya Raman’s record on public safety is clear:

- 2020: Called to “defund the police.”
- 2021: Pushed to cut LAPD from hiring 300 new officers
- Jan. 2026: Voted against hiring 170 new LAPD officers to fill vacant positions

Since Raman took office, she has consistently voted to defund the police. The facts don’t lie.

We will never forget LAPD Police Officer Vincent Leusch, who succumbed to injuries received when his patrol car was intentionally rammed by a suspect's vehicle during a vehicle pursuit.

Officer Leusch had positioned his car across the roadway and was preparing to take cover when the suspect vehicle intentionally struck his patrol car at 2nd Avenue and Maitland Avenue. He was thrown 40 feet. Officer Leusch was transported to the Daniel Freeman Hospital, where he succumbed to leg, head, and back injuries ten days later.

The two juvenile suspects were arrested a short time later. One of the subjects was convicted of second-degree murder.

Officer Leusch was a United States Army Vietnam War veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife and children.

We will also never forget Detective Sergeant Edward Joseph Romero, Jr, who was killed in an automobile crash as he and his partner transported a shop owner to the police station for an interview.

His partner made a left turn in front of a streetcar on Marchessault Street near modern-day Cesar Chavez, causing a collision. Both officers were seriously injured and underwent surgery as a result. Policeman Romero succumbed to his injuries during the surgery.

Burglars smashed through the sliding glass door of an Encino home early Friday morning while the homeowner was out of town. Police say three suspects dressed in all black broke into the residence around 1 a.m. and were gone within minutes, despite an alarm alerting authorities. The homeowner’s father says this is now the third time the same house has been targeted by burglars. LAPD is investigating, and it remains unclear what was stolen.

We will never forget LAPD Police Officer Mata, who was killed in a single vehicle accident while he responded to backup another officer who was investigating a stolen vehicle.

During the response, Officer Mata lost control of his cruiser and struck a utility pole on the driver’s side. Officer Mata’s partner was injured in the accident and was freed by responding officers. Rescue crews had to use the jaws of life to remove Officer Mata from the cruiser. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Mata had been with the Los Angeles Police Department for six years. He is survived by his wife, a recent graduate of the Sheriff’s academy, and his two young children.
