We will never forget LAPD Police Officer James Beyea, who was shot and killed by a suspect during a foot pursuit. The suspect was able to gain control of Officer Beyea's service weapon and fatally shot him.

The suspect was shot and killed a short time later by canine officers who had tracked him to the attic of an abandoned house.

Officer Beyea was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for nine months. He is survived by his parents and sister.

A Valley Glen homeowner got quite the surprise while cleaning out her garage Thursday morning: 20 sticks of live dynamite hidden inside an old freezer. LAPD bomb squad personnel responded to the home, evacuated nearby residents as a precaution, and safely recovered the explosives. The homeowner stated they had no idea the dynamite was there or how it ended up in the garage. Detectives are investigating to determine where the explosives came from.

A grand theft auto suspect caused a dangerous pursuit through Koreatown, Westlake, Harvard Heights, and Pico-Union. The suspect repeatedly drove into oncoming traffic and weaved through busy city streets. Officers deployed a spike strip and executed a PIT maneuver near Pico Boulevard and Toberman Street to end the pursuit. The suspect surrendered in the middle of the roadway and was quickly taken into custody.

We will never forget LAPD Police Officer Paul Verna, who was shot and killed after making a traffic stop of a vehicle containing two armed robbery suspects. One of the men shot Officer Verna once, then passed the revolver to the second subject, who shot him five more times.

Both men, both 26, and two women, both 25, were apprehended the next day. On October 2, 1985, both men were sentenced to death. As of December 3, 2022, both were still on death row.

Officer Verna was a United States Air Force veteran and served 14 years in law enforcement. On December 10, 1981, he rescued two boys with intellectual disability from a burning building. He is survived by his wife and two sons - both of whom went on to become LAPD police officers.



We will also never forget LAPD Officer Randol Marshall, who was killed in a motorcycle accident at the intersection of Saticoy Street and White Oak Avenue while reporting to an assignment.

Officer Marshall served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and two young daughters.

LAPD officers tracked the pair to a nearby business after receiving reports of a burglary in progress. One suspect, whose face appeared heavily painted and included a drawn-on mustache, was seen smiling while being taken into custody.

We will never forget LAPD Officer Houston Tipping, End of Watch May 29, 2022.

On May 26, 2022, Officer Tipping, 32, was serving as an instructor during a defensive tactics training exercise at the Department’s Elysian Park training facility. While acting as a role player for students, he sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury during a training scenario and went into cardiac arrest. Officers at the scene immediately began life-saving efforts.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Officer Tipping to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he remained under medical care. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on May 29, 2022.

Officer Tipping was a five-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Shirley, and his sister, Kat.

We will also never forget Commander Paul Gillen, who was killed in a police helicopter crash during a training exercise. He was the highest ranking member of his agency to be killed in the line of duty.

Commander Gillen was a U.S Navy veteran of WWII and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 25 years.

A tragic hit-and-run in Los Angeles took an even more disturbing turn when an Amazon delivery truck was stolen from a driver who stopped to help the victim. Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed on a freeway on-ramp before a Good Samaritan used his delivery vehicle to block traffic and render aid. While he was helping the injured victim, someone allegedly stole the truck and fled the scene. Detectives are now searching for both the hit-and-run driver and the person responsible for stealing the Amazon vehicle.
