: As roared ashore Sunday night, killing at least one person and knocking out power to more than a million, I tweeted about a 27-year-old man named Robert Owens. Robert wasn't able to evacuate because he didn't have any money for gas or a hotel room. As he watched his neighbors flee to safety, he went to a check-cashing place to try to secure a loan. His loan was denied because he didn't have credit.
That tweet has been retweeted hundreds of times and has been liked thousands more. Because of the kindness of strangers, Robert, his wife, four dogs, roommate, and mother-in-law who is disabled, have evacuated safely to . Since then, I have met two other families also living .
Shelley Savoie, evacuated with her family of 6. Her eleven-year-old son, two-year-old twins, daughter, daughter's boyfriend, and her grandbaby are sheltering in place in a Motel 6. Shelley used the last $500 she had to her name to from flood-ravaged . All of her money went to pay for gas to travel 350 miles out of town, plus a few nights in a hotel. She works as a customer service rep & is fearful she will lose her . Shelley is completely out of cash & needs funds to get her & her family through the next few weeks.
Lisa Clement evacuated , with her 4 children, husband & inlaws. They are currently sheltering in a campground & evacuated with $100 to their name. They don't have money to pay for food and campground fees after this Wednesday.
A 2019 survey shows that 45% of all Americans have no savings at all. If a family is faced with a catastrophe or natural disaster, it could wipe them out.
My nonprofit, The Eric De La Cruz Hope for Hearts Foundation, would like to make a difference by raising at least $3,000 for these 3 families within the next 48 hours.100% of the funds will go directly to them. With your help, they can stay sheltered, safe, and fed for the time being.

It's a small amount that will make an immediate difference in the lives of some of the men, women, children, and pets suffering from the impact of this devastating storm.
