Join the AWARE-LA Class Committee for this introductory workshop exploring class and how it relates to a white anti-racist practice. We will review class definitions and indicators, and share tools to develop a more nuanced understanding of class in general and your own class experience specifically. We’ll also look at some ways that classism shows up in our lives and in this work, and explore some alternative ways to show up with a class-conscious lens.

Join us online today at 11am for Pomona Valley Saturday Dialogue! For the content portion of the dialogue, we will be doing a workshop on White Supremacy Culture. We will first discuss what is even meant by 'White Supremacy Culture' and why its definition is important. We will then investigate a few of its specific characteristics. Where do these characteristics show up in our lives? How do they affect us? What might their antidotes be? How can we move forward into new ways of being in relationship and community?

In this workshop, we will be talking about white supremacy as a system of oppression, and we’ll explore the ways in which that system informs our culture. We will investigate some of the specific characteristics of white supremacy culture, and discuss how we see this culture showing up in ourselves and in our jobs, organizations, or communities. We’ll also imagine possible antidotes to these harmful characteristics we can apply in order to create a new culture and new ways of being in relationship and in community.

For those who were unable to attend the class story circles, we will offer an opportunity to engage in this difficult but beautiful exercise in community-building and a deeper personal exploration of class. If you already attended a class story circle, you can choose to reshare your class story OR participate in perosnal solidarity. We will also be sharing some exciting ways to get more deeply involved in some of the work we are doing in Class Committee.

Personal Solidarity
In personal solidarity, we break out into groups of three (but it could be two or four), and split the time equally for sharing, strategizing, and active listening on personal/interpersonal issues around race and class. Some folks ask for and make space for feedback, and others just want to talk about what is most alive for them right now. It’s important to ask folks if they want feedback before offering it.

Class Story Circles
We will be breaking out into small class-caucused groups to share our personal class stories as part of onboarding new members of the Class Committee. During the story circle small groups, there will be no cross talk or responding, just each person taking a turn to tell their story. We will have time to debrief the process as a large group toward the end of the call.

Click the link below to review some class definitions and indicators. We encourage you to figure out in advance where you fit in, so we can easily split people into breakout rooms. If you need additional support figuring out which class group you fit best into, please let us know. In this workshop, we will share tools and practice skills that can allow us to have more effective conversations with people in our lives surrounding the topic of police and prison abolition. We recommend you watch our Political Education "Abolition House Party" webinar first to learn more about the history of policing and prisons in America and dissect how it has led to the current militarized state. Here is the Abolition House Party recording, transcript, and audio file. This workshop will then offer tools to have constructive conversations that open people up, as opposed to shutting people down, when talking about "defunding the police" and creating a society based in justice and care.

NEW WORKSHOP STARTS TOMORROW!!!

Are you committed to working toward a more just world by confronting racism and white privilege in your life? Are you also having trouble wrapping your head around the idea of police and prison abolition? This is the workshop for you! Engaging in racial justice work means expanding our worldviews beyond our currently held assumptions and beliefs. This workshop is not meant to judge anyone’s politics or be a measure of your commitment to racial justice. Instead, it is meant to challenge us to hone our listening skills so that we can find value in ideas that might not immediately resonate with us.

And, if you are already on board with abolition, we still encourage you to attend. Even when we are deeply invested in racial justice, we still find ourselves challenged by perspectives that stretch our beliefs. We need to continue to develop our listening skills so that we can overcome our own internal resistance whenever it pops up.

We will offer this workshop every Thursday in August, 6:00pm - 7:30pm PDT.
