I'm a day late but I couldn't find a good photo yesterday. Here is my mother, surrounded by her brothers, in 1929. She was 16 years old. She was very tall, especially for the time. I don't know if she ever realized how beautiful she was.

Years ago my mother told me she was once the no. 3 woman archer in the country. Today I found proof! In the September 1947 edition of Archery magazine she is listed as number 3 in the August national tournament in Salt Lake City. There is also a photo on the cover of participants. I have been unable to find her among them.

I used to have more books than I do now. I got into the habit of giving them away after I'd read them (or trading or selling them). However, I still keep certain books on my shelves.

I received this book from my father for Christmas 1966. That was the year I moved to California to study at Cal State University Los Angeles. I loved the book. Read it hungrily, absorbing all the details of Bach's life. It has remained with me all these years.

It's an excellent biography. It is still being sold, at prices ranging from about $6 to $98 (on Amazon) and up to $300 (on eBay). Mine has significant wear but is still solid, ready to read again. What I most think about, though, when I see this book, is the dreams I had back in 1966, the visions of a future full of music, even possibly one in which I pllayed Bach compositions on the piano. I feel a small ache for the loss of the dreams.

Congratulations to Helena Arahuete, chief architect in John Lautner's office for many years. Her own work is now being exhibited at the Art, Design, and Architecture Museum in Santa Barbara. The featured exhibit will be on view through December 17, 2023. It's certainly time that Helena's work is recognized, including her contributions to John Lautner's works.
