Election Day is just a few days away! Make sure to return your ballot or head to a vote center by Tuesday, June 2nd.

Although Nikkei Progressives cannot endorse candidates because we are a 501c3, we can take positions on propositions and measures. We encourage a YES vote on Measure ER! Head to the link in our bio for our full voter guide.

Also, check out the op ed “Disenfranching Voters? Not on our Watch!” our Electoral Committee wrote for the Rafu Shimpo, as well as the piece “The MAGA Supreme Court is Taking the Country Back to the Jim Crow Era” from our latest newsletter. Links in our bio!

More on Measure ER:

Also known as - Essential Services Restoration Act for Los Angeles County General Sales Tax Measure - Measure ER would enact a ½ percent (0.5%) increase in the general sales tax for 5 years to cover the funding gap that was created by the federal passage of the Big Beautiful Bill. The measure is expected to raise approximately $1 billion annually which will have annual independent audits and will reduce the loss of essential healthcare services such as public hospitals, clinics, and public health programs caused by the federal cuts. Although this is a regressive tax not legally restricted to healthcare spending, NP believes that it is an important safety net in this perilous economy; therefore, voters should vote Yes on Measure ER.

Nikkei Progressives (NP) and Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) stand with the Muslim community in condemning the attacks on the San Diego mosque and share the grief of losing three members of their community. We are angered by the violence and Islamophobia that is promoted by those in power and saddened at the suffering and harm that the Muslim community is facing. We know that none of us are immune to these racist and hateful attacks. We will not allow these actions to be normalized and instead we affirm our solidarity with the Muslim community. We need to come together.

Show your much needed support of the Muslim community by attending the upcoming Global Muslim Village on June 6 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) LA chapter . Head to the link in our bio to reserve your tickets.

Another LT Sparkle in the books!

This weekend, NP members joined a few hundred volunteers to pick up trash and remove graffiti and stickers at the annual Nancy Kikuchi Volunteer Day, also known as Little Tokyo Sparkle ✨

We love our neighborhood, and it feels great to give back to a space that gives so much to us 🌻

Give a follow to learn more about how we’re taking care of our neighborhood and planning for a sustainable future 💪

❌No mega mall in Little Tokyo and Skid Row❌

Join us at the PLUM hearing this Tuesday, May 12th at 2pm! Our neighborhoods deserve housing that actually addresses the needs of our community, not more luxury housing developments.

We as Little Tokyo and Skid Row partners are calling on everyone to do 3 things:
1. Use the Little Tokyo Community Council’s hearing toolkit to attend the PLUM hearing and give public comment AND
2. Write a letter explaining why you or your organization is against the project as it currently stands.
3. Use the Little Tokyo Community Council’s media toolkit to share about the development online.

And if you feel the need to claim that this is the “largest affordable housing development downtown” just because the project will be meeting the minimum requirement of affordability… please look up The Umeya and First Street North, two developments that are 100% affordable (with wraparound services) and actually partner with the community to ensure that the harms of gentrification and displacement are mitigated/reduced.

If you’re interested in giving public comment at the PLUM hearing for the Fourth & Central development on Tuesday, May 12th, come to our practice session!

On Monday, May 4th 6-7pm over Zoom, we’ll work together to prepare our public comments and to practice giving them within the 2-minute time limit.

This hearing is our final chance to have our voices heard before the final City Council vote. Giving public comment can be intimidating, but we are here to encourage each other and remember that this is how we get our community’s voices heard!

RSVP at the link in our bio!

If you want to learn more about the Fourth & Central development and why the community opposes it, there’s another link in our bio!

A few weeks ago, over 40 NP members and friends gathered to march in the No Kings rally in downtown LA. With our Asian Americans Against ICE banner leading the way, we marched from JANM plaza through Little Tokyo to City Hall. We enjoyed connecting with folks and organizations at the rally and look forward to continue building our relationships and coalitions to strengthen the movement 💪

Thank you to those of you who joined us for the march and the sign making event!

On Saturday, members of Nikkei Progressives participated in the Caravan and Serenade at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center organized by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network , the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice , the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center and others. Over 300 people gathered to pay respects to the 13 community members who have died preventable deaths at this ICE facility and to show support for all those currently detained there.

NP member Suzuki gave a powerful statement representing the Shutdown Adelanto Coalition. Performances by Los Jornaleros del Norte and other musical groups serenaded those inside, while messages of support were loud and clear. Family members of detained immigrants shared stories about the conditions inside and the impact detention has had on families.

We will keep fighting until Adelanto is shut down for good!
