We are honored to have been a part of the 2026 Theodore Payne Native Plant Garden Tour! We welcomed 733 visitors, including 67 Oxy Alums, to our native garden at 1541 Campus Road. It was an inspiring day, highlighting the value of sustainability on campus and in the community, the learning and leadership of our students, and Oxy’s partnerships in Los Angeles. Many thanks to the UEPI team, UEP 247 class volunteers, the Office of Sustainability, and others who made this event happen.

Last week we read to students at Loreto Street Elementary! The books focused on the importance of trees in our communities and schools. Our students across our NELA partner schools are excited to have new trees in their play yards and campuses soon as part of our ongoing EscWELLA project.

Join us on Monday, March 16th to hear from Dr. Hanna Garth discuss her new book, “Food Justice Undone: Lessons for Building a Better Movement”!

Drawing on twelve years of ethnographic research, Garth examines what motivates people from more affluent, majority-white areas of the city to intervene in South Central Los Angeles. She argues that the concepts of “food justice” and “healthy food” operate as racially coded language, reinforcing the idea that health problems in low-income Black and Brown communities can be solved through individual behavior rather than structural change. Food Justice Undone explores the stakes of social justice and the possibility of multiracial coalitions working toward a better future.

The book is available for sale at the Occidental College Bookstore and will be available for sale at the event. A copy of the book is available for loan at the Mary Norton Clapp Library.

Hanna Garth is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University, author of Food in Cuba: The Pursuit of a Decent Meal, and coeditor of Black Food Matters: Racial Justice in the Wake of Food Justice.

We hope to see you there! 🌱📚

Last week we had the honor of co-hosting the 2026 Southern California Sustainable Supply Chain Convening with the UC Global Climate Leadership Council on our very own Oxy campus. We brought together over 60 individuals to strengthen connections between growers, distributors, institutions, and resource providers. We look forward to the continued facilitation of this ever-growing, values-aligned food system network. Thank you to the GCLC planning committee, .feast.garden students, Oxy catering and facilities, and our local producer partners at and for making this event come to life!

Introducing our inaugural Urban Ag at the Market Community Cohort! Thank you so much to Huarache Farms for hosting our first field trip. We had an amazing time exploring the space, discussing urban agricultural methods, and learning about growing for the market.

“Urban Ag at the Market” is a program of UEPI’s Center for Community Food and Resilience in partnership with Food Access LA and Avenue 33 Farm. Over the last year, we developed a program to guide urban farmers, backyard growers, and campus farms to grow for and sell at their neighborhood Certified Farmers’ Markets. More to come soon! 👩🏾‍🌾🌱

We are thrilled for the opportunity to have Dr. Monica White, author of Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement, visit Occidental on Thursday, February 29th from 3-4pm. Dr. White is a scholar in residence at Occidental College this year. Dr. White’s research investigates Black grassroots organizations that are engaged in the development of sustainable, community-based food systems as a strategy to respond to issues of hunger and food inaccessibility in both contemporary times and the twentieth century. This event will be an informal Q&A where both students and community partners will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion.
