❣️ Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Today we wanted to share these images of Danzantes Aztecas Group Xipe Totec, whose artistry and presence we have had the pleasure of collaborating with over the years!

These pictures are from our MacArthur Park “Roots of Our Labor” mural opening this past Spring, where Xipe Totec set the tone for this beautiful community celebration with a grounding ceremony and blessing.

With gratitude, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash Peoples. We honor their cultures and pay respect to their elders and descendants – past, present, and emerging – as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters 💛

🌟 Last month, our Executive Director Karen Mack had the honor of speaking at the neighborhood opening of the stunning, new Lucas Museum.

It was amazing to be in the presence of George Lucas himself, and during his remarks, he shared about the role of narrative art and underscored the power of storytelling, which aligns with the mission of LA Commons. Everyone has a story to tell 📝📚✨

💖 Karen’s remarks expanded more on LA Commons’ vision about the power and universal nature of stories no matter who is telling them. Stories have immense power!

The celebration also had wonderful remarks from Mayor Karen Bass, Mellody Hobson, Co-Founder of the Lucas Museum, and Ambassador & good friend of LA Commons, Eric Garcetti. We are so grateful to have been inspired by their words!

☀️ Over the summer, our LA Commons youth artists have been learning a lot and working hard through our “Youth 250: Empowering the Next Generation” project as part of the Smithsonian’s “Our Shared Future: 250” initiative.

This unique summer program brought together high school students from across Los Angeles to explore culture, identity, history, and civic engagement through community experiences, storytelling, leadership, and the arts. 📚💫

We want to give a special thank you to Kalynn Youngblood (kalynn youngblood) for being a wonderful lead artist and mentor to our Youth 250 youth artists. 🎨 Kalynn led the youth through learning and exploring more about the culture and histories of Leimert Park, and culminated all these learnings through a dazzling cyanotypes workshop! 💙

🌟 This summer series has been so amazing! We can’t wait to keep learning with our youth artists and continuing to preserve the important histories of our neighborhoods.

📣 We are HIRING! ✨

LA Commons is searching for a visionary, creative and experienced Director to steward the newly state-designated Historic South LA Black Cultural District (BCD).

🖤🤎 This role will be critical to not only shaping the BCD, but laying the foundation for the legacy and longevity of the district as a pioneering model for Black cultural preservation in the state and nation.

The Director will work as an LA Commons employee working in deep collaboration with California Senate District 28 and the BCD Advisory Council. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏿🎨 LA Commons was tapped by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas to serve as the BCD’s key implementation and community partner, which eventually led to the Historic South LA Black Cultural District’s official state designation in December 2025. The Director will continue to steward this relationship with the Senator’s team and the LA Commons community and arts-centered approach in engagement and planning efforts.

And our Leimert Park Photography Workshop exhibition has officially come to a close! ✨

🖤 “The Heartbeat of Culture” exhibit, held at ORA Cafe (ORA Urban Cafe) was the culmination of a 14-week Leimert Park photography workshop series inspired by the “Photography and the Black Arts Movement (1955–1985)” exhibit at Getty

📷 Thank you to everyone who showed up to our closing reception last month – it was a heartwarming event to celebrate all of our Photography Workshop participants and all of their talents!

And of course, shoutouts to our Photography Workshop lead Halline Overby (Haylow (Halline)) and co-lead Momodu Mansaray (Momodu Mansaray) for extending your photography skills and knowledge! 🎞️🧡

Join us on Sunday, Oct. 4th to experience Betye Saar’s transformative installation “Drifting Toward Twilight” that is part of The Huntington’s “This Land Is…” exhibit. This amazing experience will include:

♥️ Dialogue with Saar’s granddaughters, Maddy Inez (slide 2) and Sola Saar Agustsson (slide 3)
🍽️ A delicious and intentional meal including ancestral foods with connections to history, heritage and regeneration
🌱 A grounding soundbath as you walk through the experience
