Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honor the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost to acts of bigotry and anti-trans violence. This year, at least 34 transgender and/gender non-conforming people have been murdered by violent means in the United States alone. Sadly, this number may in fact be higher because trans victims are often misgendered by local police and news media reports.

Remember these victims, commit to educating yourself about issues facing the trans community, and take action by supporting organizations that are dedicated to making this world a safer place for trans folx.

Misgendering occurs when someone refers to another person (usually a transgender or non-binary person) using a word, especially a pronoun, that does not accurately reflect the gender identity of that person. Sometimes, people misgender trans and non-binary folx in an effort to be hurtful; but, most of the time, this happens unintentionally. When you hear someone use incorrect pronouns to refer to another person, normalize correcting them. Avoid allowing acts of misgendering to go unchecked because this can negatively impact the victim and perpetuate further acts of misgendering.

Today, approximately 25% of self-identified LGBTQ+ youth report using neutral pronouns and, according to the 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health by The Trevor Project, people whose preferred pronouns were “respected by all or most people in their lives attempted su***de at half the rate of those who did not have their pronouns respected.”

QEDU can help! We offer comprehensive educational services to help audiences learn more about concepts of gender identity and how to implement a language of inclusion at school, at home, or at work.

BLACK LIVES MATTER.

June 1st marks the beginning of LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This year, let us honor our Black brothers and sisters by standing with them in solidarity. Let us remember that our Pride celebrations began on the backs of Black and Brown transgender women. Let us educate ourselves and others on the history of racism in this country so that we may more clearly see the lasting effects of a hateful and discriminatory system. Let us be angry. Let us be sad. Let us use these emotions to fuel our fight against this broken system. Let us do this together.

This morning, Larry Kramer - author, playwright, and outspoken AIDS activist - has died from pneumonia related complications at 84 years old. As the founder of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis and Act Up, Larry helped shift public health policy during the HIV/AIDS epidemic and is credited by Dr. Anthony Fauci as “playing an essential role” in the development of drug regimes that helped prolong the lives of those infected with HIV. He will always be remembered for his activism and the stories he brought to life.
