Los Angeles Food Policy Council The Los Angeles Food Policy Council is a collaborative network working to make Good Food-healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable- available to all LA

The Los Angeles Food Policy Council is a collective impact initiative, created in January of 2011 to advance the mission of building a Good Food system for all Los Angeles residents where food is healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable in order to improve the health and well-being of our residents, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color; develop a thriving Good Food eco

nomy for everyone; and strengthen agricultural and environmental stewardship throughout the region. LAFPC coordinates the expertise and leadership of public, private, nonprofit and academic partners to strengthen connections across the food system.

The presence of ICE agents in Southern New England is increasing. ICE abductions tear at the fabric of our communities while increasing food insecurity, disrupting the agriculture and food sector workforce, and raising grocery prices for everyone. Join us December 3rd at 3:30 ET to learn how the Chicago Food Policy Action Council and the Los Angeles Food Policy Council have responded to increased ICE activity in their communities.

Food access organizations in Los Angeles experienced a surge in demand at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The food access ecosystem is a deeply interconnected web of individuals and organizations that have tirelessly responded to the need for access to healthy, quality food in Los Angeles. Nonprofit Finance Fund, in partnership with the Los Angeles Food Policy Council and with support from Cedars-Sinai, interviewed people from food banks, pantries, family-owned businesses, social enterprises, mutual aid efforts, and a community college to understand key financial dynamics and funding needs. Findings from these conversations have been captured in a new series of case studies with recommendations for how funders can strengthen the Los Angeles food access ecosystem: https://learn-nff.org/3MFYAIz

The Los Angeles Food Policy Council (LAFPC) is pleased to welcome and celebrate Alba Velasquez as our new Executive Director. In case you missed it, last month we officially announced this planned executive leadership transition between Christine and Alba. Many of you already know Alba, who has been with LAFPC for over half of the organization’s existence. We are excited for Alba and for LAFPC as we embark on this new chapter. We are confident that Alba’s vision for LAFPC’s future and her thoughtful leadership will continue to strengthen our ability to serve our communities as they continue to face great challenges regarding food access and equity.

Please join us in supporting Alba as she stewards LAFPC into a new era of the food justice movement. Congratulations Alba!

The Los Angeles Food Policy Council’s Executive Committee in partnership with the Executive Director has some bittersweet but exciting news to share. Christine Tran will be executing a planned leadership transition initiative beginning May 1, 2023. She will be departing in June to focus on family-related priorities and to complete her Ph.D. We are grateful to have had Christine's strong leadership over the past three years. We are simultaneously excited to announce the appointment of our current Director of Operations & Programs, Alba Velasquez, to receive the baton from Christine and lead the organization through this important period of change as our new Executive Director. This week we launched FARM FRESH LA, LA Food Policy Council's nutrition incentive program in collaboration with With Love Cafe and funded primarily by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

At participating stores , , and , when you make a $5 CalFresh purchase you receive a free bundle of produce valued at $20. What makes Farm Fresh LA unique amongst other nutrition incentive programs is how it focuses on the local food supply chain and stimulates the local economy by providing revenue to local farmers, aggregators, and small businesses.

Through Farm Fresh LA, we aim to show that nutrition incentive programs not only provide greater access to healthy food but are also an opportunity for economic growth.

We're excited to launch the newest iteration of FARM FRESH LA, LAFPC's healthy retail initiative dedicated to leveraging CalFresh dollars in order to connect local food growers with communities of color in Los Angeles. Along with our partners, the California Department of Food and Agriculture and With Love Cafe, we are providing free bundles of fresh produce with a $5 CalFresh purchase at our participating stores. These produce bundles are locally sourced and will vary seasonally over the course of the next 15 months. We are launching this initiative in three stores that have previously participated in our Healthy Neighborhood Market Network program — Skid Row People's Market, Lupita's, and Pickford Market. Visit our stores and stay tuned to hear about the success of the initiative and discussions on ways that we can expand it within Los Angeles!

The Regenerative & Urban Agriculture Working Group, one of five active working groups at LAFPC, will be hosting an Urban Grower Alliance Gathering this Saturday, March 25th at Moonwater Farm from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm.

The Urban Grower Alliance was created in response to a need identified by community members who voiced their desire for relationship-building networks among the urban grower community. The goal of this first meeting is to conceptualize an identity for urban agriculture in the Greater Los Angeles region.

We hope to see you there!
