✨ MEET LAPP'S FIELD INITIATIVES INTERN: DRACULEIA L. SEWICK! LINK IN BIO FOR INTERVIEW ✨

“Being a person of color, q***r, and disabled — not only means that I subvert the norm," says Draculeia L. Sewick, "but it can also mean being othered by communities that were meant for one aspect of my identity because of an intersecting aspect. So I’m very much interested in unconventional themes, philosophical controversies, and contemporary challenges against conservative perspectives.”

Draculeia has been an integral part of the Los Angeles Performance Practice team as we work to administer the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships. Draculeia L. Sewick is an emerging illustrator and author whose transdisciplinary practice explores the inherent nonconformity of intersectionality — particularly among POC, Q***r, and Disabled identities. Their artistry began with illustrations and digital paintings featuring gothic, spiritual, and multicultural surrealism that portrays the unique textures of diverse narratives. Expanding into theater, film, and literature, they continue to develop their practice with an artistic mission to dissect the psychological, sociological, and philosophical contrasts of identity culture.

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Sophia Cleary! sophia cleary - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

Cohort member Sophia Cleary (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist focused on performance and liveness. Making her work through the lens of the fool, or trickster, Sophia uses play as a method and critical position to engage her audience in a system where power dynamics necessarily shift. In our latest Los Angeles Performance Practice Blog interview, Sophia shares with Jazz Zhu about comedy, vulnerability, and, of course, power.

“I come into a theater, okay, great. I know exactly what it is I’m supposed to do as an audience member, and I’m kind of like, how can we push against those scripts? And if we can start transgressing the scripts given to us in the theater, then how can we get comfortable enough with the discomfort of that to do that outside of the theater, too?”

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Nadene Pita! - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

ACCELERATOR cohort member Nadene Pita is a Māori interdisciplinary performance artist and musician who synthesizes a breathtaking sound bouquet of contemporary-intercultural music, experimental jazz, and a unique voice. After being awarded a 2023 Emerging Artist Fellowship by the California Arts Council, she returns to Los Angeles Performance Practice as part of ACCELERATOR. In this interview conducted by Jazz Zhu and edited by Draculeia L. Sewick, Nadene reflects on her early relationship with dance and music, the tension between balancing advocacy for others with advocacy for herself, and her experience as an immigrant artist in Australia and America.

“… Being Māori, I did not, when I was younger, even connect that with my practice. It’s become more and more important, but it was something that I grew up feeling not positive about. So, to feel like I can embrace that now has been a really beautiful process for me.”

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Crystal Sasaki! - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

Cohort member Crystal Sasaki (she/her) is a Butoh dancer and multidisciplinary performance artist based in Los Angeles. Her works combine movement, text, and audiovisual poetry in an ongoing investigation of dreams, communication, heritage, animism, and healing in our hyper-mediated world.

“I’m working with whatever is in the room. I’m working with the day. I’m working with what I’m moving through personally. And what it feels like is going on in the world at the time.”

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Jeonghyeon Joo! - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

Cohort member Jeonghyeon Joo (she/her) is a haegeum performer/composer based in Los Angeles and Seoul. Her practice includes performance, composition, improvisation, artistic research, collaboration, writing, and teaching. She explores the physical, social, cultural, and political relationship between the performer and instrument, frequently collaborating with filmmakers, visual artists, composers, and performance artists.

“I was like, I don’t just want to perform, I don’t just want to compose, and I was getting into improvisation. I just got introduced to the underground experimental music scene in Seoul and I discovered there are so many cool people who think outside the box and music practices out there that I never thought about and that school never taught.”

Meet ACCELERATOR artist Tanya White! - LINK IN BIO

ACCELERATOR is Los Angeles Performance Practice's flagship artist development program--a nine-month intensive that empowers multidisciplinary artists to build sustainable, visionary, and self-determined creative careers.

ACCELERATOR cohort member Tanya White is a theater artist working and performing as a playwright, actor, director and teacher. She’s a frequent contributor to storytelling shows in Los Angeles and believes the personal narrative is the foundation for healing collective trauma. She is currently the Artistic Director of Santa Monica Repertory Theater.

“Making work and creating spaces to share it matters. The act of sharing is just as important as the content. We need to honor interiority, connect in ways that go beyond words, and keep responding to the world as it is.”

It’s that time of year! Los Angeles Performance Practice is hiring a paid intern to assist us with administering the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships. This is an exceptional opportunity for an outstanding undergrad or spring 2026 grad to gain hands-on experience at an artist-led nonprofit. Together, we will run an application and review process that will lead to re-granting $800,000 to Los Angeles-based artists.

This year's internship begins the first week of June, and ends in early September. The intern will work approximately 400 hours (30 hrs / week), at $18.47/hr. The internship is supported by the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program.

How to Apply: Please submit a thoughtful letter of interest after researching our organization, along with a current resume, to [email protected]. Be sure to include your name, pronouns, full contact information, educational institution, and expected year of graduation.
