The Orangutan SSP is a resource for the advancement of captive care and in situ conservation of the orangutan.

Our goal is to give those in our care the best possible lives, and to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of wild orangutans. Together with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Orangutan SSP serves the 55 accredited zoos that house orangutans in North America. We work closely with respected professionals in the field to provide help and guidance to zoos housing orangutans. Together, zoos and the SSP seek to provide the best possible environment for these amazing animals.

On Dec. 16, 2025, Ruhana was delivered by a rare and medically necessary C-section. While her mother, Jahe, recovered from surgery, the primate team had to provide temporary hand-rearing.

In this final chapter, follow the primate team through seven days of around-the-clock care, the milestones, uncertainties and tender moments, all leading to the emotional reunion of mother and baby.
