Orangutan SSP The Orangutan SSP is a resource for the advancement of captive care and in situ conservation of the orangutan.

Our goal is to give those in our care the best possible lives, and to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of wild orangutans. Together with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Orangutan SSP serves the 55 accredited zoos that house orangutans in North America. We work closely with respected professionals in the field to provide help and guidance to zoos housing orangutans. Together, zoos and the SSP seek to provide the best possible environment for these amazing animals.

Texans putting on their fall sweaters even though it’s still over 90 degrees…😅

P.S. Everyone be nice to Jiwa about his teeth (he gets daily health checks, and his teeth are just fine!)

Goodbye, pool season. Hello, blanket season! Happy Fall! 🍂

Here in Florida, “fall” has begun with morning temperatures dipping into the high 70s, but cooler days will be here before we know it.

Here’s to a new season, wherever you are!

Happy 26th birthday to Pebbles!

Pebbles lives at the Center for Great Apes where they know how to celebrate a birthday!

We hope she gets her favorite treats and doesn't get into too much mischief!

Pebbles is celebrating her 26th birthday today!

Clever, curious, and always observant, Pebbles has a way of turning almost anything into a problem-solving opportunity. When caregivers recently installed a new cargo net in her bedroom, Pebbles was less interested in the net than in the hardware holding it together. She carefully inspected the bolts...and even managed to undo two before caregivers could reinforce them!

That same focus makes Pebbles an enthusiastic participant in her healthcare training. She is the first ape at the sanctuary to learn every body-presentation behavior caregivers currently train. Pebbles voluntarily participates in behaviors that support blood draws, injections, blood-pressure readings, eye care, weigh-ins, and other important parts of her healthcare. She even takes part in an exercise program!

Pebbles also keeps a close watch on the plants growing around the sanctuary and is often among the first to notice when something begins producing fruit. Right now, she has her eye on a growing pineapple and regularly checks with caregivers to see whether it is finally ripe enough to enjoy!

Please join us in wishing this intelligent and inquisitive orangutan a very happy 26th birthday!

Special thanks to Pebbles’ Day Sponsor, Erin O., for sponsoring her daily care and birthday treats today!
