Happy Holidays Whalewatch Style!

All had a 🐋 whaley 🐋 good time at the Cabrillo Whalewatch Holiday Party!

✨️In addition to the joy of the Holidays, this event celebrates the closure of the first chapter of the training program, with close to 70 people successfully completing the required and always-dreaded *exam*! Congratulations 🎊 👏 🐬 (Twenty more will take the exam at a later date, for a total of 91 2023-2024 Naturalists!!)

It also marks the soon-to-start whale watching season. While gray whales are already trekking along our coast, the whale watch season traditionally kicks off on December 26th.

- The "White Whale" Gift Exchange dug up some super fun ocean-themed goodies!
- The Great Cetacean Creation Dessert Contest was as creative as it was delicious!
- The winner baked up the world's largest whale barnacle!
- Patty found the perfect gift!
- Diane Alps had a fin-tastic time swimming around with all her whale friends!
The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium courtyard is a beautiful setting for such an event!

Very interesting research by Charles Scott Baker of the Marine Mammal Institute - Oregon State University that highlights the complexity of ecosystems and the difficulties faced in trying to undo past blunders.

Thousands of whales were wiped out in the Antarctic Ocean. Now, after commercial whaling was brought to an end in the Southern Ocean, whales are making a comeback. But they aren't the same whales off South Georgia Island.

We had a FIN-tastic time on Tuesday when we kicked off the 53rd season of Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist Training! What a legacy of education and outreach in and around Los Angeles, and beyond!
