🌍 Playground Passport: Stop #1 – Shane's Inspiration

Before there were 81 inclusive playgrounds on 5 continents, there was one.

In the autumn of 2000, Shane's Inspiration opened in Griffith Park as the first fully inclusive playground in the Western United States. At a time when many children with disabilities were excluded from playgrounds, this groundbreaking space reimagined what play could be: a place where children of all abilities could play, learn, and grow together.

The playground was inspired by Shane Alexander Williams, the son of founders Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams. Together with Tiffany Harris, Co-Founder and CEO of Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration, they created a place where children of all abilities could play side-by-side — a vision that would grow into a global movement.

Nearly 20 years later, Shane's Inspiration underwent a major renovation, reopening in 2019 with new inclusive equipment, enhanced accessibility features, and sensory-rich play experiences.

As we approach our 30th year of creating inclusion through play, Shane's Inspiration continues to inspire friendships, belonging, and possibility for thousands of children and families each year. It remains one of the most visited playgrounds in Los Angeles and the flagship playground that started it all.

Because play changes lives. 💙

💙 Every child deserves this.

A place to laugh.

A place to play.

A place to make friends.

A place to belong.

For many children with disabilities, opportunities for inclusive play are still limited. That's why Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration creates playgrounds and programs where children of all abilities can play side-by-side, build friendships, and simply be kids.

Because childhood should be filled with joy, connection, adventure, and possibility.

Because every child deserves this.

💙 Inclusion doesn't happen in a day. It happens through friendships built all year long.

For the past nine years, Ms. Ramirez has helped lead Lockhurst Elementary's Buddy Program, continuing a tradition of bringing students together through friendship, shared experiences, and meaningful connections.

Third, fourth, and fifth grade buddies spend time together during recess, snack, and lunch, building relationships that grow throughout the school year. Each student is paired with two buddies, creating opportunities for connection, support, and belonging.

Together, they attend field trips, art classes, assemblies, PE, and dance—learning from one another and proving that inclusion benefits students of ALL abilities.

Programs like this don't just create friendships. They build empathy, understanding, confidence, and stronger school communities. That's the heart of our Together, We Are Able® program—and what inclusion looks like when students are given the opportunity to learn and grow together.

Thank you to Ms. Ramirez and the entire Lockhurst Elementary team for helping students discover what inclusion looks like in action every day. 🌟

🌍 Happy International Day of Play!

Today, we join the United Nations, UNICEF, UNESCO, and organizations around the world in celebrating play as a fundamental right of every child.

Established by the United Nations in 2024, the International Day of Play recognizes what children have always known: play is more than fun. It helps children develop cognitively, physically, socially, emotionally, and creatively while building confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging.

At Inclusion Matters by Shane's Inspiration, we believe play has the power to change lives, build communities, and create a more inclusive world.

🌎 We have created 81 inclusive playgrounds on 5 continents, uniting children of all abilities through play.
📚 Our play-based social inclusion curriculum has been delivered in 67 countries worldwide, helping children learn empathy, friendship, acceptance, and belonging.
🌐 As an organization with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations, we are proud to advocate globally for every child's right to play, belong, and thrive.

No matter the language, culture, or ability, play has the power to bring people together.

Today, we celebrate every child's right to play—and our shared responsibility to ensure that play spaces are safe, accessible, and inclusive for all.

🎉 And the celebration continues this Saturday!
Join us for our own International Day of Inclusive Play on Saturday, June 13, from 10:30 AM–1:00 PM at Glen Alla Park in Marina del Rey for a free family playdate filled with fun, friendship, and inclusion.

💙 We’re sharing these helpful self-care reminders from our friends at UNICEF.

As parents, it’s easy to put everyone else first. But taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it helps you show up as your best self for your children.

A few simple takeaways:
• Self-care can be as little as 10 minutes a day
• Prioritize sleep, movement, fresh air, and connection
• Ask for help when you need it
• Build small self-care habits into your daily routine
• For parents of children with disabilities: remember that taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your child
• Remember: when parents thrive, children benefit too

One of our favorite reminders: “When we care for ourselves, we are better able to care for our children.”
