Medlife at UCLA

Medlife at UCLA MEDLIFE at UCLA is a chapter of the MEDLIFE Organization. Our mission is to provide service and aid to low income families everywhere, both locally and abroad.

What is MEDLIFE? Our mission is to help families achieve greater freedom from the constraints of poverty, empowering them to live healthier lives. Our patients did not choose to be poor, but they have chosen to strive toward a better life; MEDLIFE stands beside them in this pursuit. MEDLIFE believes access to quality healthcare is a basic human right.

Our organization offers students an unrivale

d opportunity to engage in hands-on work both locally and globally in order to improve the lives of those in need. Through our service learning trips, development projects, and community service in Los Angeles, students are able to work with the community members and professionals to encourage meaningful, sustainable change to areas of extreme poverty. Dedicated students also have the opportunity to help direct our domestic and international operations through various leadership positions and internships, both in the United States, Latin America, and Africa. MEDLIFE has already served tens of thousands of individuals in Peru and Ecuador, and we will continue to grow with your help. Hey UCLA MEDLIFE! Thank you all for attending our LAST meeting for the year! We had so much fun meeting our new e-board and playing skibblio as well as announcing our superlatives 🤩

Thank you to everyone who was part of the MEDLIFE movement this year!! We would not be able to provide the help we give to low income communities without our dedicated volunteers! We’ll be sure to keep in touch the next coming weeks and throughout the summer!! Good luck on finals, Bruins! 💪🏻

Thank you to everyone who came out to MEDLIFE's Week 5 Meeting! 🤩

Today we talked about the impact that COVID-19 has had on locations like Peru where we have gone for our service learning trips. Because of the loss of jobs due to government closure, many individuals have been suffering financially.

In order to do something about this, MEDLIFE will be implementing the COVID Relief Fundraiser! In order to enter, all you need to do is donate $5 to on Venmo and record how many steps you can walk every day for one week! 🌟 The first place winner will win 50 dollars!

Finally, UCLA MEDLIFE will be accepting leadership applications for the next school year! They will be due Week 7 Wednesday by 6 PM :) If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!

Hey MEDLIFERs!
Thank you for coming out to our Week 3 Meeting! 🤩
Today we learned about the speakers that will be attending our pre-health panel that is happening this Saturday! We have medical professionals, medical students, and other speakers that will answer our questions!

We also learned about COVID-19. In 2015, Bill Gates talked about steps that we as a country need to take in order to prepare for the next epidemic.

Currently, we have doctors that have taken steps to conduct clinical trials regarding medications for COVID-19. Researchers are suggesting that HCQ, a medication for treating lupus, may be effective in treating the disease when it is used with zinc. However, all of this research is suggestive and we hope that definitive cures will arise soon.

We hope that this meeting was informative and hope that you have a good rest of the week despite the circumstances 🌟

It’s time for another member spotlight 🤩💓

Name: Elizabeth Popescu
Year: 3rd
Major: Biology
Experience: MEDLIFE has been an integral part of my college experience thus far. From the moment I joined as a freshmen I was passionate about serving low income families through community service. MEDLIFE has opened my mind and heart through opportunities to serve meals to the homeless population and provide health screenings during health fairs to name a few. Most of all, I have made lifelong friends and mentors that I’ve had the chance to share all these moments with. MEDLIFE has allowed me to grow as a leader and more importantly to expand my compassion and empathy. I am extremely proud to represent MEDLIFE as president this year.

Hey MEDLIFERs! 😊 Despite the rough circumstances, we hope you are having a good spring break 🌟 We wanted to introduce you to one of our E-Board members!

Name: Raha Zahedi
Major: Psychobiology
Experience: MEDLIFE has given me the opportunity to make a difference in my local community, be more active and involved on my campus, advocate for global health measures, challenge myself on every level, and form incredible bonds with my fellow club members. Not only have I been able to make an impact on others’ lives, but my life has also changed in many ways because of the wonderful people I have met through this organization. My fondest memories are our weekly community service events — from installing free smoke detectors in low-income communities to packaging food at the LA Food Bank, these events have provided me with invaluable skills and a greater sense of purpose in my community.

Member Spotlight 🌟
Name: Jaallan Prabaharan
LSHIP Position: Co-Community Service Coordinator
Major: Bioengineering

There are a lot of things I really enjoy about Medlife, but if I had to pick the ones that mean the most to me, it would be these: the bonds and friendships I have formed with my fellow club members and seeing how much of a difference I have been able to make in the local community. I especially enjoy our Sound the Alarm events, where we partner with the American Red Cross to install smoke detectors in underserved parts of the LA community. During these events, I am able to directly see the impact I can make on other people’s lives and how meaningful our service is to them.
