Los Angeles Environmental Learning Center at Hyperion - ELC

Los Angeles Environmental Learning Center at Hyperion - ELC The City of Los Angeles created the ELC to teach people about sustainable water and solid resources

The 20,000-square foot facility is the stunning result of completely renovating the Hyperion Treatment Plant’s former administration building into a leading center for environmental learning. Sustainable practices and learning experiences were built throughout the LEED Gold facility. Admission and parking are complimentary, but advance reservations are required. Groups are preferred. 310-648-5363

When you visit, look for the following features that we have incorporated to demonstrate and teach sustainable resource management:

* A first-floor gallery of interpretive exhibits that focus on clean water and watershed protection.

* A second-floor gallery that discusses solid resources and shows how Los Angeles is on the Road to Zero Waste.

* A green roof that is irrigated with recycled water, skylights that provide natural light to the second floor, photovoltaic panels that generate electricity, wind turbine, solar water heater, and a view deck to observe the treatment processes at Learning Center at Hyperion and Santa Monica Bay.

* A terraced wetland fed with recycled water and stocked with mosquito fish.

* A walkway to the entrance made of permeable pavers, a stream and drought-tolerant landscaping.

* An 87-seat auditorium and learning lab classroom.

* Other sustainable features, such as chilled-beam air conditioning, waterless urinals, low VOC (volatile organic compound) paint, and smart controls for irrigation.

As a measure of caution in relation to the containment of the COVID-19 Virus, we are closing the ELC to the public until further notice. We will also be suspending all tours of the adjacent Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant.

This decision was difficult, but the health and safety of our employees and visitors is our primary concern. We understand that this temporary closure may cause some inconvenience for you and we appreciate your understanding. Our entire team looks forward to welcoming you again when concerns have passed.
⠀⠀⠀
Thank you for your continued support.

Help put a stop to wish-cycling. Wish-cycling contributes in a big way to contamination, which is when an incorrect item or material is added to a specific waste stream, in this case the recycling stream.

When a batch of recyclables is contaminated, there’s a good chance it’ll be rejected and end up in the landfill. In other words, because of that one problematic thing you tried to recycle, tons of properly recycled items could get landfilled.
