Picture Alternatives

Picture Alternatives Picture Alternatives is a nonprofit that uses high-impact visual storytelling to promote alternatives to violence. Why? How? Take a look. The need is clear. Bonus.

Today the most powerful agent of personal and social change is visual media. If we want to prevent violence, we need to enlist the emotional power of visual storytelling. When it comes to practical, constructive tactics that reshape the way people handle conflict, we need to SEE it to do it. Our solution is clear. Get the message across that violence doesn’t work, and that constructive approaches

to conflict do work—then amplify the message through creative media. From interpersonal relationships to the international political arena, we are your creative ally for nonviolent solutions. Our productions are short. They’re really good. They’re engaging to watch, whether video, animation, motion graphics, memes, photos—the whole gamut of the visual revolution. We’re based in Los Angeles, the creative capital of the world. There’s lots of talent around here. With our friends and partners who also work to give violence a bad name, Picture Alternatives helps impact the choices we make and our perceptions of what works and what doesn’t. If you can imagine a world with less violence, you’re already part of the change. Let’s really make it happen.

Chilling and important findings from Everytown for Gun Safety

Lonely men who hate women are incredibly easy targets for online radicalization—and all too often, they end up getting their hands on a gun.

One of our favorite stories about Archbishop : He was walking by a construction site one day in Cape Town on a temporary sidewalk the width of one person. A white man appeared at the other end, recognized Tutu, and said with a growl, "I don't make way for gorillas." At which Tutu stepped aside, made a deep sweeping gesture, and said, "Ah, yes, but I do."

During the Holocaust, a scholar wanted to understand why some non-Jewish families harbored Jews vs. others who cooperated with N***s & turned in neighbors.

The common denominator?

The families who helped/harbored Jews had a childhood where discipline was done WITHOUT violence.
People who were abused to “obey authority” were far MORE likely to submit to authoritarians in power. Those that weren't traumatized actually followed their conscience and helped protect others, risking their own lives to save others in peril.
In his book "The Holocaust Lessons," David A. Cooperson talks about these findings and compassionate parenting.

Countless scientific studies have shown that corporal punishment is not only ineffective, it actually results in, “higher aggression rates” and “higher defiance of adults. ”
Assessing whether corporal punishment helps students, or hurts them
Corporal punishment is still used in 21 states' public schools. Proponents say the method can motivate children to behave, but research suggests otherwise.

The piece linked above also goes on to cite a neurological study that found, victims of corporal punishment “had lower brain matter in the part of the brain associated with self-control.”

We can't call our country "developed" if corporal punishment is still legal (which it is).

Deep insight into Hollywood's love of guns--and the increase in the infatuation over the last few years.
"Gun violence in Hollywood movies has increased dramatically over time, especially in movies accessible to teens. Indeed, our research shows that acts of gun violence in PG-13 movies nearly tripled over the 30 years between 1985 (the year after the rating was introduced) and 2015. Similar trends have been observed in popular TV dramas, with the rate of gun violence depicted in prime time dramas doubling between 2000 and 2018.

The upsurge in the depiction of guns in movies and TV shows is likely related to the realization that violence draws audiences and guns are an easy way to dramatize violence. And here filmmakers have a willing accomplice in the gun industry.

Media outlets are averse to allowing gun advertising on TV or mass-circulated magazines. But guns are amply displayed in top-grossing movies and popular TV dramas.

We know that the gun industry pays production companies to place its products in their movies. They are rewarded with frequent appearances on screen, so much so that in 2010 the firearm company G***k won a “lifetime achievement award for product placement,” with a citation noting that G***ks appeared in 22 box office No. 1 films during that year.

The payoff for gun companies can be great – prominent placement in high-profile films can result in a significant bump in sales for gun models."The potential harm caused by guns in Hollywood goes far beyond the occasional tragic accident on set. Studies show that simply seeing a gun can increase aggression in the viewer through what is called the 'weapons effect.'”

A tragic accident resulted in the shooting death of a cinematographer on the set of actor Alec Baldwin’s latest movie. The dangers of more guns on set extend to society, two scholars argue.

Today is National Financial Awareness Day. Did you know that financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship? Ruined credit scores, sporadic employment histories, and legal issues caused by the abuse make it extremely difficult for survivors to gain independence, safety, and long-term security. Pranksters vs. Autocrats. Fascinating case studies.

In the spring of 2013, Turkish police made a public announcement at a metro station in Ankara warning passengers to “act in accordance with moral rules” after having spotted a couple engaging in a public display of affection. The admonishment backfired, and the next day, dozens of couples staged...

According to Judge Roger Benitez, "Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment."

We noticed a few key differences between an AR-15 and a Swiss Army Knife and wanted to highlight them for him.
