Youth Health Watch Saturdays! Building an army of youth community health workers! Today, we learned about the corona virus and the importance of public health surveillance. In preparation for a mini documentary film we are creating, we also learned about access to healthcare and the social determinants of health. Love seeing these kids get inspired!

This weekend, we started the Winter/Spring 2020 sessions. We had a powerful session on Feb 1 recapping what we have learned so far this year from topics related to mental health, understanding the importance of mindfulness, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and why it's critical to know your family's medical history. This weekend's topic covered colon cancer. The teens were tasked with ensuring that loved ones of age and/or at risk get a colon cancer screening. If you know someone over age 50 who has not had a colonoscopy, please get on them!!

Great workshop this weekend!! In recognition of world Mental Health Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness month, we discussed how to help loved ones access much needed prevention services and follow-up treatment. We had a lively discussion on access barriers and the role of information to help equal the playing field in access to health care. Love these teen change agents! They are the future. The future is now!

In recognition of World Su***de Prevention Month, Youth Health Watch was a live streaming venue for the 4th Annual Su***de Awareness and Prevention Conference at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital on September 14. Teens at New Designs Charter School listened to the keynote address by Carol Todd, mother of Amanda Todd who tragically ended her life at the age of 15 due to being a victim of intense cyberbullying. Her hope is that we all learn to have courageous conversations about su***de, identity risk factors, and reach out to support those who seem lonely and isolated. ***deawareness
