Sola Community Peace Center Transformative Peace and Justice Programs in South LA for young people ages 5-17 - school year and Summer Day Camp We are a peacemaking community.

These programs are peace and justice programs for children and youth in which all - including teachers - learn to be better peacemakers, create non-violent social change, and learn leadership skills. Together we learn about others - young and older who have made a difference in the world for peace and justice non-violently. We meditate, eat healthy food, garden, cook, do art and crafts, music and games, all in the service of peace. We plan and carry out service projects together.

Since 1993, Denmark has enforced a radical ultimatum for its youth: one mandatory hour of absolute empathy every single week. They call it Klassens tid.

When faced with skyrocketing pesticide and nitrate levels in its drinking water supply, the city of Munich, Germany bypassed expensive chemical treatment plans and chose a radical path: they tackled the contamination at its very root. Through the municipal public utility the city calculated that building a filtration facility would cost roughly 23 to 46 cents per cubic meter of water. In contrast, financially supporting local farmers in the Mangfall Valley watershed to transition to certified organic agriculture cost a mere half-cent per cubic meter. By stepping up to fund the farmers’ certification fees, infrastructure investments and temporary income losses, Munich proved that working with nature is 45 times cheaper than trying to mechanically fix the damage of synthetic chemical run-off. Decades later, over 185 farms have successfully converted, pesticide levels have collapsed to near-undetectable minimums, and Munich stands as a global beacon for true environmental economic planning—proving that protecting the soil is ultimately the most cost-effective way to safeguard the tap.

Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern that naturally absorbs large amounts of CO₂ from the air. A 1-hectare pond of Azolla can capture approximately 21,266 kg of CO2 annually, making it 18 times more efficient than an equivalent area of the Amazon rainforest

In fact, around 50 million years ago, massive Azolla blooms in the Arctic are believed to have helped cool the planet by reducing atmospheric carbon levels.

Today, scientists are exploring how this powerful little plant could help us fight climate change again — from carbon capture to sustainable agriculture and water restoration.

In the middle of the 20th century, three quarters of Costa Rica was covered in dense rainforest. Then the loggers arrived, and within decades, the country lost more than half of that canopy. By 1983, only 26 percent of the land still had forest cover.

What happened next is one of the most significant environmental reversals in modern history.

Costa Rica woke up to what it was destroying. Policymakers restricted logging permits, created a national forestry commission, and in 1996 made it illegal to cut down forest without government approval. The following year, the government launched the Payments for Environmental Services program, paying landowners and farmers directly for protecting, planting, and maintaining forest on their land. Conservation became economically competitive with logging and agriculture.

The results were measurable and dramatic. Forest cover climbed from 26 percent to nearly 60 percent. The country became the first tropical nation in the world to fully reverse deforestation. It now hosts around half a million plant and animal species in an area roughly the size of West Virginia.

Tourism followed the trees. Today, half of Costa Rica's GDP is linked directly to ecotourism, which in turn depends on healthy rainforests. The country made conservation profitable, which turned out to be more durable than making it mandatory.

Costa Rica runs almost entirely on renewable energy, has pledged to be carbon neutral, and received the United Nations' highest environmental honor.

Across the tropics, the rest of the world lost tree cover equal to 40 soccer fields per minute in 2017. Costa Rica was moving in the opposite direction the entire time.

If a small country with limited resources managed to double its rainforest in four decades, what is actually stopping larger nations from following the same model?
