The Writer's Den at UCLA

The Writer's Den at UCLA A creative writing student group at UCLA. We meet on Tuesdays in Haines A28 Wooden High School, and bi-weekly to John Adams Middle School.

The Writer's Den has two main goals:

1) To provide a forum and community for creative writers ⁠— Once a week during meetings, members come together and share their creative writing with one another. Writers are given a space to their work with and receive feedback from other students. We also offer a time and space for everyone to write, to a provided prompt or on existing projects. Outside of me

etings, we also have a Discord server to provide more communication and community amongst our members. No application process, just an interest in writing and willingness to share with fellow writers.

2) To teach creative writing to elementary, middle, and high school students ⁠— Our volunteers go weekly to Fairburn Elementary School, Columbus Middle School, and John R. We believe creative writing is an important way to allow students to express their feelings and exercise their imaginations. At the end of the year, we give the students a tour of the UCLA campus and a printed compilation of their class's works.

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is doing well with midterms and holidays coming up :) in the meantime, we have our quarter publication deadline coming up this Tuesday 11/21! This fall, the theme is “City of Stars” and we encourage anyone interested to submit their creative pieces with us, whether it’s about moving to LA for the first time, coming back to LA, or saying goodbye.

We accept short stories, poetry, and other forms of creative writing as long as it doesn’t exceed 5 pages single spaces with 12 point font. We also welcome visual artists to submit covers for the anthology which engages with the theme of “City of Stars!”

Please send submissions to [email protected] with “City of Stars Submission” and your name in the subject headline. For more information about submissions, please refer to the weekly Writer’s Den email sent out. Happy writing and enjoy thanksgiving!! 📝🦃

Hey writers! As Halloween approaches, we invite you to join the celebration with the Writer’s Den’s annual Murder Mystery night! The theme is the Necropolis Gala, a charity masquerade, and it will be this Friday, October 27, 6-8 pm at Haines Hall 118.

‘Maybe you received an invitation and are on the highly-esteemed guest list. Or perhaps you’ve decided to join in on the festivities after hearing whispers here and there. No matter how you learned of the event, your status at this party, or your intentions… behind a mask, only you know your true identity anyway…’

Character submissions are already closed, but everyone is welcome to come out and join the party even if you didn’t submit a character! We’ll have snacks and good vibes :) Hope to see you all there!

Hi all! This fall, we are currently recruiting more volunteers to come join our school sites. Volunteering is a fun opportunity to connect with younger children and students and teach them more about creative writing! Besides getting to teach about creative writing, you also get hands on experience being able to work with kids on a personal level and develop strong bonds with them. We have 4 different sites this quarter:

- NEW SITE: Canoga Park Middle School: 2-3 pm every Wednesday (~40 min drive)
- John Wooden High School: 11:30 am - 1 pm every Wednesday (~30 min drive)
- Mount Gleason Middle School: 2:15-3:10 pm every Friday (~ 40 min drive)
- Fairburn Elementary School: 1-2 pm every Friday (~20-30 min walk)

Welcome back to a new school year! We’re so excited to meet all of y’all, whether you are new or returning for another year with us :) we’ll be having our first general meeting this fall quarter at Ackerman 2412 from 6-7 pm this Tuesday 10/3 where we’ll go over some club introductions, announcements, and do a fun writing activity together. Come join us Tuesday, 4/19 over Zoom for a Q&A with our first Guest Speaker for the Spring Quarter: Patricia Verducci!

Pat has written screenplays for Touchstone Pictures, Witt-Thomas Productions, and Disney’s animation division. She has also worked as a story consultant for Disney/Pixar and with Academy Award winning screenwriters on their feature scripts.

She wrote and directed the feature film True Crime, starring Alicia Silverstone, and her writing credits also include documentary shorts for HBO and Showtime. She co-produced Somewhere Between, a feature documentary about four teenaged girls adopted from China, and is the writer of Bella: Citizen Artist, a documentary about the modern dancer Bella Lewitzky. She served as a story consultant on Disney’s Tinkerbell franchise, including Tinkerbell: The Secret of the Wings and The Great Fairy Rescue, and is currently a script consultant on several projects for Film Victoria, Screen Australia, and Jungle Entertainment.

Pat serves as a mentor at the Meryl Streep funded Writers Lab for Women in New York and has also worked as a volunteer teacher for InsideOUT Writers-- a non-profit that runs creative writing workshops for incarcerated youth inside Los Angeles County’s juvenile halls.

Pat is a member of the Writer’s Guild of America, and teaches in the MFA screenwriting programs at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television and The American Film Institute.
