Since 1917 the Lions Club mission has been to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding. In 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Today we are proud to announce the formation of a new Lions Club
called the West Los Angeles Knights of the Blind (WLA KOB), which focuses on programs and services for the blind and visually impaired community. The impetus for this clubs formation was heavily influenced by the work of CRE Outreach, a non-profit performing arts organization that helps underserved populations in the greater Los Angeles overcome their challenges through the creation of original artistic works. Their Changing Perceptions program provides visually impaired participants of all ages with essential life skills through the performing arts. Theatre by the Blind, the country’s only theater troupe composed entirely of blind adult actors, writes and performs original productions, inspiring audiences and informing the public while changing misconceptions about the capabilities of the blind. CRE Outreach programs actively engage the most underserved individuals, empowering them to live better lives and successfully navigate through today’s society. The West Los Angeles Knights of the Blind Lions Club is proud to support organizations like CRE Outreach that raise awareness about the importance of engaging visually impaired individuals, empowering them to live better lives, and helping them to successfully navigate through today’s society.
