Eclipse: Journey Through the Nadir

For those seeking a Visionary Experience of the eclipse, the following is a brief exploration of its natural poetry, mythic dimensions and ritual space. The poetry of an eclipse holds space for renewal. In the last sliver of light, we see death and a waning past. In the dark circle of a hidden sun, we see the womb of creation... This turning point from Nirvana (extinguishing) to enlightenment can be seen in any nadir… Clocks turn round these darkest of moments, which appear in our myths as bottommost points, innermost chambers, and bellies of beasts. This is the throne room of the underworld, where Inanna, rotting on the peg, is given life from a thumbnail. This is the lowest point in the journey through death, Aker, where life first sparks in Osiris. In Eclipse mythology, this is when the Eastern dragon eats the sun, or when its light is devoured by Norse wolves. This devouring is followed by pregnancy and the birth of something new, which is the promise of any nadir. To enter the path of totality is to enter what Aldous Huxley calls a visionary experience…

TIME OUTSIDE TIME & THE INTERCALARY LEAP (DAY)

Most calendars have what are called intercalary days — days that fill the gaps in the calendar. Mythologically, these days take place in time outside time—like creation. For the Egyptians, who recognized twelve thirty day months, there were five days between every Egyptian year, and in these days, they celebrated their creation and resurrection myths. The darkness of an eclipse — like the dark moment in any light cycle’s renewal (midnight, new moon, winter solstice, eclipse) is the moment in the cycle that is free and outside of time. This corresponds with the moment of inner extinguishing when having a visionary experience — this is when we are unplugged from the flow of time and can touch creation. It is unfortunate that our leap day is only aligned with calendars that have been all but fully disconnected from the natural world, but we can still remember. The leap day, like an eclipse, like intercaliary days, release us from time—if only for a brief moment.

The annual Winter Solstice Myth Salon will be the night of the Winter Solstice, Thursday,December 21 at 5PM Pacific, and will feature the Oracle of Los Angeles, Amanda Yates Garcia, for a night of ritual, tarot, ceremony and deep-diving into one of most sacred days of the year – when the Earth reaches its maximum distance from the sun. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year. Accordingly, throughout the world in ancient and contemporary cultures, the Winter Solstice represents a time of renewal, as well as transition and transformation.

Yalda, Saturnalia, Sol Invictus, Soyal, Dongzhi, Toji, Ōmisoka, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Yuletide, Sinterklaas Day, and Boxing Day—the celebrations explored in the extended post echo darkness and the triumph of light. They connect us across time and cultures in a shared quest for renewal, and the enduring belief that, even in the depths of winter, light will return, illuminating our path with vitality. For poetry, as in science, things are what they are. A wall is a wall. A door is a door. A ceiling is a ceiling and a tree is a tree; only, where science exists to articulate material causality, poetry speaks with immediate meaning. It is immediate and easy to see the poetic meaning and scientific reality of a wall. The study of myth and dream is about awakening and expanding this natural poetic fluency.
