For most, October means the Halloween scaries and festivities. For us, October is College Awareness Month!

🎃 Let’s be real. The cost of college is haunting, but applying for financial aid doesn’t have to be! You won’t know your true college cost until you apply for financial aid.

✨ Bonus for Class of 2027 seniors! Attend a Cash for College workshop at your school and you’ll be automatically entered into UNITE-LA’s Spring 2027 $1,000 scholarship drawing to offset your college expenses.

Foster youth seniors in the Class of 2027: You don’t have to figure out college alone!

In partnership with United Friends of the Children, UNITE-LA’s College Access Initiative is launching the 2026–27 Foster Youth Peer Mentoring Program to support current and former foster youth as they plan for life after high school.

Participants will be paired 1-on-1 with a college-going mentor who understands the foster care experience and can help you:
🎓 Explore colleges and career pathways
💰 Navigate financial aid
📝 Complete college applications
🚀 Prepare for the transition to college

Plus, participants who complete their financial aid application will be entered into a $1,000 scholarship drawing! 🎉

Are you a student parent planning to attend college? Your financial aid application may look different depending on your circumstances.

Parenting students may qualify as independent students for financial aid purposes, meaning they generally won’t need to provide parent information on the FAFSA or CADAA. Eligible Cal Grant recipients with dependent children may also qualify for the Students with Dependent Children (SWD) Access Award, which provides up to $6,000 in additional support.

Not sure what applies to you? You don’t have to navigate the process alone. Connect with your academic counselor, your college’s financial aid office or UNITE-LA for support completing your application.

The California Community Colleges financial aid deadline is Sept. 2! 🎓

Whether you’re a prospective student, already in college or looking to return to school after some time away, financial aid may be available to help you take that next step.

Before you complete your 2026–27 FAFSA or CADAA:
📄 Gather your 2024 tax information.
🔐 Create your financial aid account and keep your username and password somewhere safe.
🏫 Identify the community colleges you’re interested in attending.

Adult learners face challenges accessing financial aid due to confusion about part-time or nontraditional enrollment.
