When Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy was struggling under LAUSD management, educators stepped up.

For nearly two decades, students, families, teachers, and community leaders have worked together to transform educational opportunities for young people in Watts.

Today, that progress is at risk.

Despite years of improvement, the Los Angeles County Office of Education is recommending denial of Locke's charter renewal.

That decision could force the closure of a school that serves hundreds of students, disrupt families, and jeopardize the jobs of the educators who helped make Locke's transformation possible.

If school improvement is the goal, progress like this should be recognized—not reversed.

Now is the time to stand together for Locke!

When students are free to show up as their full selves, something powerful happens, they thrive.

🏳️‍🌈 This Pride Month, we’re uplifting the voices and stories that are building more inclusive, affirming charter public school communities across California.

“CHAMPS Charter High School is one of the most inclusive and diverse environments I’ve been part of. It’s a place where individuality is celebrated, and the support from staff allowed me to be fully myself without fear.” - Adrian, CHAMPS alum

Every student deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are.

For Elvia, speaking up at school didn’t always feel easy.

At Para Los Niños, that changed.

Today, she’s not just supporting her son—she’s advocating for him.

Because when families are heard, students thrive.

Not every student thrives in a traditional classroom.

At SAVA, students find something different: flexibility, belonging, and a path forward that reflects who they are.

For one student, that meant turning a passion into a real-world project—and discovering her confidence along the way.

After losing her home, Sintia wasn’t just looking for a new school—she was looking for support.

At Stella Middle Charter Academy, part of the Bright Star Schools network, her daughter found more than a classroom. She found a community that understood her needs, supported her mental health, and helped her show up again.

This is what happens when schools see the whole child.

Stella Middle Charter Academy is a long-stranding community school serving a student population where more than 90 percent are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged. The challenges are real, and so is the response.
