Here it is! The next Commedia production is “Commedia Ever After”! An original title, right?😂 Pantalone, Tartaglia, and Arlecchino return with a new pair of “innamorati”, Silvia and Silvio, along with the very popular zanni Pulcinella, the schemer Mezzetino, the old and mysterious La Ruffiana, and the conceited, almost mime like, Scaramouche! Although they were mostly played with heavy white power and/or make up, Mezzetino and Scaramouche will be donning masks to keep the lovers as the only characters without masks. As you scroll you will have an idea of how these characters will be appearing. With so many Commedia troups during the 16th and 17th century the unique costumes and masks helped the audience clearly identify each character. We hope to bring this show, filled with so many Commedia antics, to schools in the Spring but of course the safety of everyone is top priority!

As we continue our little countdown we take a look at the Commedia characters that appeared in our five year anniversary show, “Band of Heroes Vol. 1: The Story Relics”. While not an official Commedia play, it did bring back heroes and villains from all the various plays that we have done thus far for our first combined universe production! Arlecchino, Brighella, Tartaglia and Pantalone join this ensemble adventure with many “historical firsts” for any Commedia dell’Arte character! The play likely being the first time the Red Queen and Alice have ever conversed with the masked characters on any stage and in a controversial move for any Commedia play or scenario, this is the first time in history we see a “mask” removed on stage while in performance😳! Important to the story however, we see how the “mask” is that final touch that brings the character to life and the significant historical value it has to the art form. In what was our longest show to date, the audience loved seeing characters they remembered from years ago joining up to stop a mysterious figure and his recruitment of villains! Tomorrow we reveal our 7th season production and see the possible candidates for a future anniversary team up, the 10th season’s Band of Heroes Vol. 2: (TBD)!

Commedia dell’Arte week continues! Our second Commedia production, “A Yucky Commedia Love Story”, was part of our fourth season. Arlecchino, Columbina, Tartaglia and Pantalone were brought back for this silly comedy. They were joined by the opportunistic Brighella, the wicked Flamina and a new pair of star crossed lovers. The play incorporated some classic “lazzi” (stock comedic routines) that the audience highly enjoyed! With another highly talented cast these historic, classic characters were once again brought to life for an audience experiencing the unique Commedia magic for the first or second time🙂!

Our first Commedia play was our second ever production, “Commedia dell’Whaté”! The show was remounted for our sixth season’s Children’s Hospital Tour. The play introduced students to this 16th century form of theatre that originated from Italy! Like any typical Commeida senario of the time, the story revolved around two “romantic” characters wanting to be in love, while the “old” characters try to keep them apart, and the “zanni” who ineptly try to get them together. Many popular masked characters of the time appear such as the old Pantalone, the cowardly braggart Il Capitano, the fool Arlecchino, the stuttering Tartaglia, the childish Pedrolino, the pompous Il Dottore, and the ever so smart Columbina. These characters combined with two great and talented casts brought students and children’s hospital patients lots of laughs and theatrical memories that we continue to bring them more commedia dell”arté stories.
