I took my wedding ring to a pawnshop to cover the costs of my ill grandson’s surgery — the man at the counter suddenly yelled, "God… IT’S YOU. We’ve been trying to find you FOR TEN YEARS!"
My 11-year-old grandson, Max, was my only remaining family.
A decade ago, my husband and daughter perished in a devastating fire. Max was just a baby at that time, too young to grasp why his mother never returned.
So, I took it upon myself to raise him. Then he fell gravely ill.
"The operation has to happen NOW," the doctor informed me. "If we wait, we may lose the chance to save him."
I sold everything I could. The furniture. The television. My linens. Even my husband’s old tools.
Only one item was left — my wedding ring.
The pawnshop was so silent when I entered that I could hear the ring tapping against my palm. The man at the counter appeared courteous at first. Then his expression changed, as if he had already judged what type of woman I was.
My hand trembled as I removed the ring.
He took it, examined the worn gold, and looked at the pale impression it had left on my finger.
"Ma’am… are you sure?"
"My grandson needs surgery tonight," I responded. "If we don’t get the money, they won’t operate."
He let out a sigh, seeming almost uninterested.
"Ma’am, I hear a hundred stories like this every week. I can give you fifty dollars for it. Consider that GENEROUS."
The embarrassment struck me so intensely that tears started to flow down my cheeks. I reclaimed the ring, clenched it in my fist, and turned to walk away.
Then his voice halted me.
"Hey. What was your husband’s name?"
"Max," I murmured. "My grandson was named after him."
The man turned pale.
For one dreadful moment, I feared he had knowledge about the incident. Something I had never been informed of.
He grabbed the phone with trembling fingers.
"I found it," he remarked. "The ring. She’s here."
I stepped back.
"Who are you calling?"
He shielded the receiver.
"Miss… we’ve been searching for you FOR TEN YEARS."
Then a lock clicked behind the showroom, and the back door swung open.
The instant I recognized the person standing in the doorway, I gasped.
