Founded in 2005, the Coalition for Responsible Community Development has a unique focus on young people in Vernon-Central (age 16-25), and collaborates with residents, businesses, community-based organizations, civic leaders, and Los Angeles Trade Technical College, to improve the quality of life in our community.

What were you doing at 19?

For a lot of people, the honest answer is: figuring it out. In LA County, 133,900, or 11.9% of young people between 16 and 24, are in that in-between right now, neither working nor in school. And it is not spread evenly. The rate moves by 17 points depending on which LA neighborhood you grew up in, because where you live changes how many doors are within reach.

Nobody re-enrolls or gets a first job because they were told to. They do it because somebody made the next step small enough to take.

That is what CRCD does for young people 16 to 24 in South LA. A place to earn a high school diploma. Job readiness. Understand how to budget your first paycheck. A case manager who follows through. No cost to you.

Know somebody in the in-between? Send them this. More info: coalitionrcd.org

Does not just train for construction. Our ecosystem includes a construction company.

October is Careers in Construction Month, and the industry is talking about its workforce shortage. Here is what a local answer looks like.

CRCD hosts programs includimg YouthBuild construction for young people. MC3 pre apprenticeship for adults preparing for a union apprenticeship. And the social enterprise, CRCD Enterprises, a licensed general contractor, is hiring from the South LA neighborhoods it builds in.

Training, credentials, and a first job on site, all inside one organization. That is how a pathway works when nobody has to leave the neighborhood to walk it.

Employers and trades partners: if you want to talk about hiring from this pipeline, our door is open.

Diversion is a legal word. Here is what it actually looks like.

CURE, Community Uniting for Resolution and Empowerment, is CRCD's diversion program for young adults facing misdemeanor charges, run in partnership with the Los Angeles City Attorney's office.

The model is simple. Instead of a conviction, the participant is connected to education, employment and support services that address the root cause of the charge. CRCD staff report progress to the court. Complete the program and the case is dismissed.

Since September 2023, 41 cases have been dismissed this way. 41 young adults entering the labor market without a record.

A conviction at 19 costs an employer a candidate and a community a worker. Diversion keeps both.

Every contractor says they can handle multifamily.

Here is ours. Ruth Teague Homes, South LA. Five stories, 52 units, developed by New Economics for Women and the Amity Foundation. CRCD Enterprises teams help to build and paint the project.

The crews were staffed through the CRCD workforce pipeline, which is how the hours on this building stayed in the community it houses. For a contractor carrying local hire commitments, that is a line item, not a story.

Developers and GCs with multifamily scopes in LA County: we would like to talk. Let's continue to build South LA together!

What does it take to build a South LA where everyone can thrive? On Thursday, October 29, we’re bringing the people working on that question into one room.

The 3rd Annual Meeting of the Minds Symposium is more than a lineup of speakers. It’s a chance to hear directly from leaders shaping policy and investment in our community, to put your questions in front of the people with the power to act on them, and to connect with neighbors, organizers, and partners who care about the same things you do.

Experience is not training. Joshua had plenty of one and none of the other.

Close to twelve years in construction, and he had never taken a formal course or learned the technical side of the trade. That is more common than most employers assume.

MC3 Pre Apprenticeship Training at CRCD gave him the classroom and the training floor. He found work and joined Ironworkers Local 416, which he now sees as the foundation of a long term career.

"I feel good about it. I'm optimistic. I feel like I got a fresh start."

A pre apprenticeship does not create a worker. It turns one into an apprentice. That is the pipeline the trades keep saying they need.
