25+ yrs of celebrating jazz as a vital thread in the cultural fabric of African American history & heritage and a defining element of the American experience -- through collaborative dance and music projects that educate and inspire as well as entertain. "Excellent live music and dancing that matches it in verve, rhythmic complexity and free-form invention: a proven concept, here distinctively res

"... [PORTRAITURE: Stories in Jazz] was a great production filled with heated solos (Swartz and Ruiz often took honors), assertive drumming by McLendon, and some remarkable dance numbers."
- L.A. Jazz Scene

"Dance has been called history written on the body, and Taylor's piece made this abstract truth utterly tangible."
- ExploreDance.com

“… artistic director Pat Taylor provided s*x, soul and style to choreography that not only dazzled but also embodied the music with primal ooze.”
- Los Angeles Times

"...a few troupes like JazzAntiqua are premised on live music, with the interaction and ongoing relationship between the dancers and a music ensemble a defining element of their brand of dance."
- Los Angeles Weekly

“Pat Taylor took that feeling and heightened it in the powerful excerpts from her “A Love Supreme,” danced with equal parts emotion and virtuosity by her locally based JazzAntiqua Dance & Music Ensemble.”

WELCOME BACK GROOVE 🎶💜

A nice and easy does it welcome back to Saturday Jazz groove to VIVA TIRADO.

I love the story behind El Chicano’s arrangement of this tune. It’s a perfect encapsulation of LA as it used to be. The LA my mom grew up in and that I also know and truly miss.

In short…
1969 - a group of young Mexican American musicians from the San Fernando Valley play a snippet of their take on African American jazz great Gerald Wilson’s composition VIVA TIRADO while performing as the house band in the lounge of Japanese restaurant Kabuki Sukiyaki (located in the Crenshaw District) before a mixed audience from all walks of life. DIG THAT!

A record label rep was in the audience. The rest, as they say, is history.

We all used to be together. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Shout out if you remember this LA!
