During a Camera Committee - Angeles Chapter Sierra Club outing we had the opportunity to photograph wild (feral?) horses near the California/Nevada border. The herd we photographed was incredibly mellow. Little tussles like this one were rare, and usually happened much further away from us. But I got lucky. The conflict lasted less than a second.

Stable auroral red (SAR) arc emission observed over
Granite Mountains by photographers in Mono County, CA.

The red glow appeared on an outing of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club Camera Committee, while photographing the Perseid Meteor Shower the group also captured the SAR phenomena. The aurora we are most familiar with is the northern or southern lights. But there are other less-known aurora, such as SAR arcs. The SAR arcs or Stable Auroral Red arcs were discovered in 1956 by Bryan Brasher, a project manager with NOOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. SAR arcs accompany the northern lights, appearing at the southern edges. The red glow are too faint to see with the naked eyes but can be captured by digital cameras. (Photo by Allan Der)

I found this spooky looking stuff in space: IFN or Integrated Flux Nebula. It is interstellar dust, it is very faint, not lit by stars but by integrated flux of every star in our galaxy. The star in the middle is Polaris, the North Star. The dust is so faint that I need to be in very dark sky area to photography it along with a 2-1/2 hour exposure. The sky at my cabin is Bortle 2, almost the darkest skies.

Look for the upcoming night sky and wildlife photography trip in the Eastern Sierra. Here is something to get the juices flowing.

Up next is the Delta Aquariids meteor shower. They ramble across the skies for weeks. Look for them from late July through early August.
