Black History Month reminds us that representation matters, especially in reading.

When students connect emotionally to stories and ideas, learning sticks. Confidence grows. Doors open.

At J3, reading is not just about decoding words. It is about feeling seen. When students see themselves reflected in books, reading becomes a place of possibility.

That is why culturally relevant books are central to our work. Representation is not a bonus. It is a pathway to learning.

Honoring Black voices, Black stories, and the doors they help open.

As the year comes to a close, we’re creating space for what matters most.

J3 Foundation will be closed through January 2 so our team can rest, recharge, and spend time reconnecting. We believe that caring for the people who do this work is part of how we sustain it.

We are deeply grateful for our team and our community, and we look forward to returning on January 5 with renewed energy for the year ahead. Wishing you a peaceful and restorative holiday season.

As we wrap up the year, our students are finishing strong.

After weeks of small-group reading instruction, End of Session Bags help students carry their reading lives beyond the classroom. Inside are books and reading tools designed to support daily routines, confidence, and access at home, because building the habit of reading matters just as much as learning the skill itself.

This is part of J3’s whole-child approach to literacy. We focus not only on reading growth during the school day, but on creating the conditions that help students keep reading on their own, with pride and independence.

We’re grateful to the volunteers who gave their time to help prepare these bags, including the CTBC team CTBC Bank USA who joined us to support students as they finished the year strong.

We are excited to welcome Lauren Wiens to the J3 Foundation Board of Directors.

Lauren brings more than 15 years of nonprofit experience, including building strong grant programs, leading teams, and supporting sustainable growth through strategic fundraising. As the Founder and Principal Grant Consultant at Ink & Impact Grant Consulting, she partners with organizations to help secure funding that advances meaningful, lasting change.

Her connection to literacy is deeply personal. During the pandemic, Lauren saw firsthand how complex and frustrating learning to read can be for some children, an experience that reinforced her commitment to expanding literacy opportunity for under-resourced communities.

We are honored to have Lauren’s voice, expertise, and belief in what’s possible for 4th graders at this pivotal point in their academic lives. Welcome to J3, Lauren.

Today is Giving Tuesday — and too many 4th graders are standing at a turning point without the reading support they need.

Fourth grade is where reading gaps widen into long-term barriers. Students who struggle now face steep challenges to confidence, graduation, and future opportunity.

That’s why J3 Foundation exists.
We create the supportive spaces where students build reading confidence, find joy in books, and rewrite their own futures.

Beyond the Page, Possibility Begins.
Your Giving Tuesday gift opens the door to opportunity for 4th graders across Los Angeles.

Fourth grade is where reading gaps widen into long-term barriers. Students who struggle now face steep challenges to confidence, graduation, and future opportunity.

That’s why J3 Foundation exists.

When students have trusted reading coaches, supportive spaces, and books that reflect who they are, the future opens up. With the right guidance, they don’t just catch up — they leap ahead.

This Giving Tuesday, your gift helps open the door to possibility for 4th graders across Los Angeles.

A fourth grader whispers, “I can’t read.”
A trusted reading coach looks them in the eye and says, “Yet.”
With the right support, skills and confidence grow — and “I can’t” becomes “I can.”
This Giving Tuesday, help open the door to confidence, connection, and possibility for young readers.

Sometimes a fourth grader looks at a page full of words and quietly whispers, “I can’t read.”
At J3, we meet that moment with one simple truth: they can. They just need steady support and someone who believes in them while they build the confidence, skills, and habits that make reading finally click.

This is what happens when students receive research-backed reading intervention, books that reflect their identities, and a trusted coach who shows up week after week.

Confidence grows. Curiosity grows. Possibility grows.

This Giving Tuesday, your support helps more students move from “I can’t” to “I can.”
More small groups. More encouragement. More breakthroughs that last far beyond the page.

Give today and help open the door to opportunity for young readers in Los Angeles.

One of our students started the year reading at a Kindergarten level. She barely spoke above a whisper in class. But in her J3 small-group sessions, she began sounding out words, then sentences, then pages.

You wouldn't believe the pride her teacher saw on her face when she finished her first chapter book — and lifted it with a smile that said, “I did it.”

That moment is more than reading. It’s confidence. It’s possibility. It’s a door opening.

Today, we’re launching our Giving Tuesday campaign: 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗲.

Your early gift helps us reach even more 4th graders this school year with the support, books, and encouragement they deserve.

This powerful reminder speaks to the lifelong impact of literacy. When we nurture a child’s love for reading, we’re not just helping them decode words: we’re teaching them to question, to dream, to empathize, and to grow into thoughtful, informed adults. That’s why we do what we do. Every book, every story, every reading session is planting seeds for a brighter future. 💡💙

Ethan frequently struggled with behavioral problems in his general education classroom. When he first joined J3, he refused to participate in the curriculum, however, it was clear that he was listening. He passed his first mastery test (taken after then 10th lesson), and began participating in the verbal portion of the lesson. His behavior in his general education classroom was still challenging, but he was always quietly focused during J3 sessions.

Gradually, he became one of the most engaged students in his J3 group. But, more importantly, his reading improved, and his general education teacher has noticed a difference in behavior on the days that he attends J3. It took him some time to get engaged, but it has made a huge impact on him.
