Mosaic Stepping Stones at The Rebel Garden:
Youth sketched their ideas, arranged mosaic shards, and transferred their designs onto concrete stepping stones, practicing composition, balance, and intentional spacing.

To connect art with environmental learning, The Friendship Garden, youngsters created plant labels using recycled drink containers, chopsticks, and art supplies. This encouraged scholars to practice plant identification, explore creative ways to reuse materials, and understand the importance of protecting California’s native plants.

September brings a new Rebel Garden cohort beginning this month at our Chuco’s Justice Center A.L.I.V.E site, and a new facilitator to introduce to you all!

Cynthia Luján is a muralist, teaching artist, CSULB alumna working regionally in Southern California with collaborating with communities. Her notable ongoing series recently exhibited is titled Our Spaces, celebrations of active transportation centering the joy that empowers folks to travel through their neighborhoods in varying mobilities across Southern CA and to create urban communities to create inclusive, safe, and more accessible public spaces.

We’re thrilled to be working with Cynthia as a guiding muralist and teaching artist for youth The Rebel Garden as they embark on designing and painting an on-site mural from start-to-finish this fall! Welcome, Cynthia!

On July 18th, 2026 our community came together for a beautiful, inspiring and creative fundraising event — our first in-person fundraiser in almost a decade!

There was incredible music, delicious food & drinks, lively conversation, hand-made art, and of course, a spectacular runway show featuring TRASHION designs all by local creatives. So many special and artful elements came together to craft a truly magical & memorable evening with nearly 150 attendees! Thank you to our amazing community for showing up for us, we love you!

(“Clear Vision”: Single use plastics, Clear vinyl, orange thread, hot glue, silver chain. Created in 2024 by Toban Nichols Studio as a comment on the overuse of single use plastics and how easy it was to collect enough material to make an entire outfit. Its shape is meant to evoke mountains and peaks like the overflowing mountains of garbage we throw away each year.)

A long time RuckusRoots friend and the Secretary of our Board of Directors opening the show! Lauren made “Static Cling” with 108 dryer sheets salvaged from four different households across the US. This piece was made for our 2012 TRASHion Show by Lauren, and worn by Lauren in our 2026 show as well!

The Jameson Dress is a labor of love by Garbage Made Godly by Hanna Aabram and an homage to Hanna’s years spent working in hospitality- reflecting the beauty, complexity and delicately armored nature of restaurant culture. With the help of friends she salvaged more than 60 caps and dedicated over 100 hours to bringing this piece to life.

This look is made from ScreenPrinted paper bags, produce bag/mesh & Grocery store mailers.

ENNA gorgeous piece “Suit Art”: Hand painted Abstract Art, each telling a story of its own, on reworked women’s pants and skirt sets from the 80’s and 90’s.

While there’s so much joy in celebrating a win, there are also silver linings to be found in moments when we didn’t get the outcome we hoped for.

We found out yesterday that we did not bring in the most votes for the 2026 Defender Service Awards, and therefore won’t be moving on to the next phase of the competition. While that stings a little, we’re celebrating the outpouring of love and support that emerged from so many corners of our community during the voting period. We were genuinely touched to witness and receive so many posts, texts, emails and encouraging messages from near and far over the last 3 weeks!

You reminded us how far our community reaches and how we truly are in this together. To us, that’s so much more special than gaining a vehicle; so today, we feel like winners!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up for us.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming of getting our hands dirty and making art in nature with friends...onwards!

Quick little weekend recap:
Our team was out and about starting with Summer Fest at Chuco’s Justice Center in collaboration with Youth Justice Coalition L.A. and many other great local orgs! We gave away over 500 edible sprouts including tomatoes, hibiscus, chives, peppers, melons & more! Thanks Cerca Cultivation for the generous donation!

Then we headed to Griffith park for Independent Shakespeare Co. Climate Action Week! Over 40 zero-waste artworks were made by local community members as they enjoyed an evening of outdoor theatre under the stars!
