Behind the photo you saw in The New York Times.
The New York Times New York Times Opinion

For America’s 250th birthday, Times Opinion ran a photograph of Tonality rehearsing “America the Beautiful.” This is the day we made it. Our singers reflecting on what America means to them, and what it asks of us.

We have been singing about this country for a decade. Not as a finished story, but as one still being written. “America the Beautiful” says it plainly in a verse we rarely sing: “America, America, may God thy gold refine.” Refinement is not rejection. To love a country is to want it to become more of what it promised to be.

That has always been the Tonality project. To sing America as a question we answer together.

This Saturday, July 4 at 6pm, we bring it to life at the America250 celebration at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Deep thanks to Thomas Prior for the photograph and Jessie Wender for the call.

We made The New York Times.

For America’s 250th birthday, Times Opinion asked a real question: what about this country still inspires us? Thomas Friedman’s answer was our unofficial anthem, “America the Beautiful.” And the photo running with his words is us, caught mid-rehearsal, singing it. Photos and thank you to Thomas Prior and Jessie Wender for the call!

That feels exactly right for who we are. We have never sung America as a finished story. We sing it as a question we keep answering together, a country still becoming what it promises to be.

The timing is its own kind of grace. This Friday, July 4 at 6pm, we bring “America the Beautiful” to life with Queen Latifah at the America250 semiquincentennial celebration at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

Swipe through, then come sing this country forward with us.
