legal advocacy is crucial in the fight to end homelessness, and we are incredibly grateful to have such passionate pro bono volunteers dedicated to the cause!

We are proud to spotlight James Evans, Partner at Alston & Bird LLP and Inner City Law Center pro bono volunteer. Read more about what pro bono volunteering means to him and why he chooses ICLC:

Why is pro bono work important?
"One of the greatest challenges we have here in California and across the nation is that people can't afford lawyers. And without the ability to afford lawyers, you've got two hands tied behind your back. If we just take that one client, we can make a difference to that one client. And that spreads."

Why Inner City Law Center?
"Inner City Law Center is a place where people can come and find support. This place is special. This place made me feel a part of it from the beginning, and I get the opportunity to make my clients feel part of it, too."

What is most rewarding about pro bono work?
"The most amazing gift my pro bono clients give me is they are willing to tell me part of their story. They are willing to let me inside of their families. When you donate your time and the client knows it, they're willing to share a lot about their lives with you if you're willing to listen."

Why should attorneys become a pro bono volunteers with ICLC?
"Where else could you get the experience of applying the skills you've developed? Where else can you get the experience of making a profound difference in somebody's life, the difference between keeping them housed or them becoming unhoused?"

After years of homelessness and the health issues that ensued from living on the street, Darren was forced to have both his feet amputated. Unable to work and denied disability benefits, Darren had no path back to housing. That's when Inner City Law Center stepped in.

ICLC helped Darren get the disability benefits he deserved, including $50,000 in retroactive benefits, empowering him to secure housing and focus on recovering his health.

Inner City Law Center is proud to share that all three of our cosponsored bills to address and have moved on to the Senate!

Here is the legislation breakdown:
- Would establish the first Office of Youth Homelessness Prevention in California, creating a statewide effort to reduce youth homelessness to Functional Zero.
- Would require California to develop and issue a statewide homelessness prevention strategy by July 1, 2027.
- Would modernize California's Density Bonus Law to increase production of affordable homes.

Our deepest thanks to the Assemblymembers and coalitions partnering with ICLC on these bills. Stay tuned for more updates!

Inner City Law Center is proud of the success of our massive Lobby Day on June 1! We were joined by 17 representatives from over a dozen partner orgs across California to advocate for $1 billion in HHAP (Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention) funding.

Advocates visited with 54 Assemblymember offices, resulting in 7 of those Assemblymembers signing on to support $1 billion for HHAP, bringing the total supporter number up to 33! We need a total of 40 votes, and these visits provided a huge boost to our efforts.

HHAP plays a crucial role in the fight to end homelessness in California, supporting programs that provide vital services to reduce and prevent homelessness.

Our deepest thanks to ICLC's own Jed Leano for leading the charge, and to the partners who showed up and showed out to make a difference!
