legal advocacy is crucial in the fight to end homelessness, and we are incredibly grateful to have such passionate pro bono volunteers dedicated to the cause!
We are proud to spotlight James Evans, Partner at Alston & Bird LLP and Inner City Law Center pro bono volunteer. Read more about what pro bono volunteering means to him and why he chooses ICLC:
Why is pro bono work important?
"One of the greatest challenges we have here in California and across the nation is that people can't afford lawyers. And without the ability to afford lawyers, you've got two hands tied behind your back. If we just take that one client, we can make a difference to that one client. And that spreads."
Why Inner City Law Center?
"Inner City Law Center is a place where people can come and find support. This place is special. This place made me feel a part of it from the beginning, and I get the opportunity to make my clients feel part of it, too."
What is most rewarding about pro bono work?
"The most amazing gift my pro bono clients give me is they are willing to tell me part of their story. They are willing to let me inside of their families. When you donate your time and the client knows it, they're willing to share a lot about their lives with you if you're willing to listen."
Why should attorneys become a pro bono volunteers with ICLC?
"Where else could you get the experience of applying the skills you've developed? Where else can you get the experience of making a profound difference in somebody's life, the difference between keeping them housed or them becoming unhoused?"
