APIDC Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California

APIDC Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California (APIDC) gives a voice and a face to Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) with disabilities.

APIDC was created initially as an informal coalition during 1999 of individuals, community based organizations, government agencies, parent organizations, and corporate executives who shared a common vision of wanting to address the specific needs of APIs with disabilities. Our first goal was to convene a two day statewide conference of consumers, families, and representatives from within and outs

ide the API community to meet, share resources, identify information and service gaps, and formulate strategies on formulating solutions. Among the conference highlights was a panel featuring APIs with disabilities who were employed in various private and public positions, including elected officials and corporate executives. The conference culminated in a resolution to convene future conferences. APDIC has since sponsored statewide conferences in Oakland, Orange County, and Long Beach. One of the important outcomes of the statewide conferences has APIDC’s initiative to undertake original research in the absence of data specifically aimed at APIs with disabilities. APIDC Research Director Peter J. Wong (Ph.D., UCLA) supported by Dr. Lois Takahashi has conducted and reported on important research results, announced at an APIDC press conference held at the Los Angeles offices of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, with Stewart Kwoh as the press conference moderator. Mark Matsui (Rio Hondo Community College) also participated in the press conference.

June is Men's Health Month. Many men often don't seek out the help they need when it comes to their mental and physical health. This is often due to the social stigma men face when to comes to asking for help and not wanting to show any weakness. For the Chicago team, the end of May means attending the annual Umbrella Arts festival! Last week, two of our Chicago team members went out to Evanston to attend the festival. It was a lively time reconnecting with familiar organizations, and getting to know new ones. Many attendees were also present, where team members were able to share about APIDC, our Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), as well as the All of Us Research Program.

Last week, APIDC participated in the Community Resource Fair at the Long Beach Asian Pacific Islander (API) Mental Health Center, where we shared information about our Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), our YLI alumni Initiative and the All of Us Research Program.

😍Thank you to the awesome team at the Long Beach API Mental Health Center for inviting us. It was great meeting the many organizations providing mental health services and resources in the LA/Long Beach area.

Happy World MS Day 🧡🧡🧡

Being diagnosed with MS can make the world feel smaller.
From doctor’s offices to long days back home, isolation can quietly take over. Sometimes it feels like very few people truly understand what living with MS means.
But World MS Day is a reminder that this experience exists far beyond our individual lives.
Across countries, cultures, languages, and communities, millions of people are navigating the realities of MS every day. Different stories. Different journeys. Shared understanding.
Awareness matters not only for MS itself, but for its global impact — and for the people living through it, often invisibly.

GROUNDING OURSELVES 🌿
Beating the Hustle of Life

In many AANHPI communities, rest can feel “earned” instead of necessary.
This May, we’re reminding ourselves: You do not have to constantly hustle to deserve peace.

Grounding ourselves means choosing presence over pressure. This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s normalize rest, balance, and emotional wellness in AANHPI communities. 💚

💛 Trade your anxiety for conversation. Whatever is weighing on you, bring it into the light with a grateful heart. You’ll be met with a peace that goes beyond logic, acting as a shield for your headspace when things feel overwhelming.

What's one thing you are grateful for today? 🌷💐
