Rest is essential to the movement.

As The Nap Ministry reminds us:

"Rest pushes back and disrupts a system that views human bodies as a tool for production and labor. It is a counter-narrative. We know that we are not machines."

We believe building Black worker power also means honoring our humanity. Rest is not a reward; it is essential to sustaining ourselves, our communities, and our movements.

With that in mind, the LABWC virtual and physical offices will be closed for a Summer Reset from August 24th through September 4th. During this time, our team will step away to rest, recharge, and return ready to continue the fight for racial and economic justice.

We'll be back on September 8th, refreshed and ready to keep building Black worker power across Los Angeles.

Until then, we encourage you to care for yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Rest is resistance, and taking care of ourselves helps ensure we can continue this powerful work.

Member Spotlight: Zheniah Houston ✨

If community care were a person, it would be Zheniah. ✊🏿

Zheniah has been part of the LABWC family for years, and today, she continues that work as a member leader.

She serves on our Communications Committee and was recently voted into our Worker Justice Organizing Committee, helping shape how we organize and build power for Black workers.

Her leadership has always been rooted in caring for the whole person because Black worker justice is about more than our labor.

Yes, we are Black workers, but we are not here solely for our labor.

We are here for love. For art. For community. For kindness. For rest. We are here to lead, create, heal, and build something better together.

And she embodies that every day.

Zheniah, thank you for reminding us that Black worker power is rooted in our humanity, too. We see you, and we appreciate you!

Black August is a month-long observance that honors the legacy of Black resistance. Uplifting Black political prisoners, liberation movements, and the continued global fight against racial, colonial, and imperialist oppression.

Black workers deserve safe, dignified jobs, not supply chains built on exploitation

Recently, member leaders participated in a Jobs to Move America campaign training to learn more about the harmful impacts of Hyundai/Kia’s weak labor standards

Including the reported use of prison and child labor and unsafe working conditions that have contributed to preventable worker deaths

We're standing in solidarity with Jobs to Move America as they call on Hyundai/Kia to strengthen its labor standards and prioritize practices that respect workers, communities, and human rights!

Worker justice means holding corporations accountable and demanding that every worker is treated fairly.

Shaping the future of 5401 Crenshaw is an act of community care. That care starts with developers who put people first.

Over the past year, residents, local organizations, and local business owners have come together to create a shared vision for this site, one centered on affordable housing, quality jobs, support for Black-owned businesses, community space, and long-term neighborhood stability.

If you're a developer who is committed to equitable, community-centered development and ready to honor the priorities residents have identified, we encourage you to submit a proposal.

Community-aligned developer proposals for the 5401 Crenshaw Site are due on August 31st.

5401 Crenshaw deserves a partner who will build with the community, not simply build in the community.

Let’s work together to ensure this public site reflects the needs, history, and future of our community.

The Stewards Council Committee is made up of worker leaders who are committed to learning their rights and helping others protect theirs. Through trainings, political education, and leadership development, Steward leaders become trusted resources for coworkers, friends, family, and the community.

By understanding workplace protections and recognizing labor violations, Steward Leaders are equipped to connect workers with the information and support needed to advocate for themselves and one another.

Real change starts with real conversations. ✊🏿

On August 3, we welcomed Mayor Karen Bass to the Los Angeles Black Worker Center for an important discussion on expanding pathways to stable public-sector careers for Black workers.

Member leaders shared their powerful stories about the barriers they've faced and the opportunities that equitable hiring and career advancement can create.

Mayor Bass committed to exploring current public-sector vacancies and advancement opportunities, and to continuing these conversations through ongoing meetings with Deputy Mayor Karren Lane.

We will continue meeting with City leadership and push for real action until we see the economic opportunity, career mobility, and workforce equity that Black workers deserve across Los Angeles and beyond.

📢 Ready 2 Work Youth Academy Update

The Youth Academy orientation has been rescheduled to March 9, 2027, with the training program running April 5 – May 7, 2027.

If you're between the ages of 18–24 and ready to build your future, this is your chance to join a program designed to help young Angelenos impacted by the Black jobs crisis gain the skills, support, and connections needed to pursue quality careers.

Through Ready 2 Work, participants receive:
✅ Paid career training
✅ Resume building and interview preparation
✅ Mentorship and leadership development
✅ Pathways to stable, long-term employment

We appreciate everyone's patience as we prepare for the next Youth Academy cohort. If you've already registered for the previous orientation, a member of our Ready 2 Work team will contact you directly with next steps.
