It’s going to be a very rainy Christmas in Los Angeles. Storms bring risk of hypothermia and other dangers that contribute to the 2,200 lives lost each year on our streets. Thank you again to our volunteers and donors who assembled and distributed more than 1,000 winter survival kits last weekend — it is a life-saving act. At The Giving Spirit, we believe that young people are the beacon of hope for our future. That’s why we not only serve unhoused youth, but also invite youth to serve.

From joining their families at our outreach events, to writing Friendship Cards, to joining our Youth Council, our young volunteers are proof that empathy can be taught and lived early. When we educate kids about homelessness with honesty and care, we’re not just informing them — we’re building a more compassionate, connected future.

Today is International Youth Day — a moment to honor not only the contributions of our youth, but the challenges they face.

In Los Angeles, thousands of youth are navigating life without stable housing — often alone, often unseen. Their struggles go far beyond shelter. They face deep mental health hurdles, interrupted education, and constant threats to their safety and well-being.

In 2024 alone, children under 18 experienced the largest single-year increase in homelessness — a heartbreaking 33% spike. Right here in our city, LAUSD is home to over 25,000 unhoused students.

But despite these realities, we see something powerful: resilience, hope, possibility.
